im getting ready to upgrade my ignition my SB. Should i go with an external coil and ignition box? or should i stick with in cap coil and module? MSD? Jacobs? MAllory? WHat is the benefit of an MSD billet Distributor? I need ideas.

A friend of mine is happy with an MSD Blaster (?) coil. Nothing wrong with stock HEI for almost all applications, except normal wear and tear with about 25 years of use : )

I have the ACCEL Super HEI, and I'm happier than a queer in a pecker patch!

HEI is real good for a mild engine, as long as everything is in good shape. MSD and Mallory are both good. I have had bad results with accel ignition parts.

There are two advantages to an external box:
    -Muliple spark
    -Rev limiter

I would make sure that whatever you do, you can use regular stock stuff as spares.

I really like the MSD stuff, I have a pro-billet distributor and a 6AL box on my 2wd truck and it does great. I haven't upgraded my 4wd yet, but I will use MSD on it as well when the time comes.

I went almost the cheap route and use the Summit HEI with the 48000 volt coil, and Taylor 409 wires(the most expensive part of my ignition) and Autolite platinum plugs.
It has worked just fine so far. I am considering upgrading to MSD billet distributor and a 6 box.
