I am in the market for a new Blazer. I have had bad luck with the 700r4 trannys and would like to go manual this time. I know that some Blazer/Jimmys came with 4 speeds. My question is what years, models, and options came with the manual trannys? How common are they? Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I think you can get any year K5 with a manual.

he newer the Blazer, the harder it is to find manuals, but they were available. Automatics just became more and more popular over the years.

During the mid 80s there was also a 4-speed with an overdrive. I had a friend that had one in his 83 k10 pickup and I saw one in a K5 once. I don't know any details about them other than they didn't seem to be very popular for some reason.

My 81 was a factory 4 speed truck, plus it was decked out with all the goodies at the time...[IMG] just more crap that'll break. Around here there are a lot of ex-Forestry K5's that are pretty plain but have the FI 350 and the SM465/NP241. If I was looking for another K5 I'd get one of those, I like them plain.
I looked for a long time before I found mine though, I also didn't want an automatic. I thought I'd never find a 4 speed truck when I finally ran across mine.

Harry is right. You will need to go to 2nd or 3rd gear first before trying reverse. I love my manual tranny too! I guess the only thing that sucks sometimes is the city driving. It doesn't bother me at all but I hate having tailgaters and people who try to pass around me off the line. It's hard sometimes, but try not to let the traffic put you in a hurry to get off the line quick. Trust me, the truck can beat tons of vehicles off the line ... just don't do it everytime or the clutch will wear out quicker. Take it easy and enjoy the rare type of truck you have. The power of the tranny is pretty awesome.

You're probably going to have more luck MAKING one a 4spd K5 than finding one, depending on where you live. I don't think I have ever seen one out here in WA, and believe me, any K5 in a parking lot, I usually cruise past to check it out. : ) People probably think I'm gonna rip it off, but it's just respect!

Dave, There are good Manual tranny blazers around. Just keep looking. I would avoid the 5 speed overdrive units unless it is a swapped in NV4500. Some trucks came with the NV3500 or Getrag transmissions. They are light duty and first gear is not very deep, only about 4:1. The 4 speed SM465, which is what you want (unless you can find a custom built NV4500) has a 6.5:1 first gear and is bulletproof all around. I looked for 2 years and finally found a clean '91, SM465, and real plain, no power accessories. It's a great truck if you can find one.
