What's a good one that is either cheap or free to update? I don't like all the big name ones like norton and mcafee... I also need something for adware and spyware. And what about file sharing, something that doesn't use the gnutella network. What do you guys use and suggest?

I use NOD32 by Eset for AV protection. The basics for adware and spyware: adaware and spybot. File sharing I use Limewire and Utorrent. Just my choices is all. Others will like different proggies better I imagine. These work for me.

    None.
I do keep Ewido on the machine, run it once a month, and run crap cleaner before I shut it down at night.

Absolutly nothing. Just pay attention to what your doing.

Virus programs are intrusive, resource hogging, slow, and still leave you venerable to the latest virus'. I never saw the point.

I've never run a virus program and I've gotton bitten a total of one time.
Quick restore from my image DVD and I was back in business in less than an hour.

I know, CustomChevy will have a problem with my opinion, this topic has come up before. But I still say it's the best thing going.

    Aol..(a-o-hell)

I have "free" Macafee virus protection with my AOL subscription..I hate it,it always starts "upgrading" without any warning,no way to delay it or stop it--it often slows my computer to a crawl, and makes it freeze up, or lose posts I was writing at the time..never did this when I had a "paid" subscription to Macafee..Also,it usually requires you to "restart" the computer,in order for the updates to "take"..that takes me offline, and it takes another 10 minutes to sign on again!.. ..a pain in the butt!..

Maybe its my crap computer ,it has only 64 MEG of ram..I think the virus protection hogs 60 MEG alone!..sometimes when I log on,the virus protection doesn't show up (the macafee symbol turns black instead of red!)..when that occours,my computer runs much faster..then the "updating" BS starts in,and slows it back down again..gets frustrating real quick!..

I am hoping to get more memory added soon, and have AVG virus protection instead--IF I can keep the Macafee out, since its part of my AOL deal,it might not let me do that..

Common Sense and a solid backup system

I can't stand AV programs - they will bring the fastest, most powerful machine to it's knees and make it run slow and chunky.

    I'll pass

AVG Free Totally Free. It is a pretty good AV program Uses little resources. I run it on an old P2 Laptop running win XP and AVG free dosnt slow it down at all unless it is updating or scanning0. Catches most viruses.
For a backup I use trendmicro Housecall http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

thats as asanine as saying pulling out prevents pregnancy.

anyone saying AV progs will bring a system to its knees needs to stop using symantec and norton. AVG will keep you safe, has a ram footprint smaller than 20 megs and uses 0cpu at idle.

with it running my system shows a 2dmark benchmark difference of -20 .... -20 our of 4200 in 3dmark06.

i'd bet given the chance to scan them, atleast 2 of the 3 people in this thread who claime to not use anti-virus HAVE a virus.

I'm sure theres probably a virus file on my box somewhere, but I do not run windoze period. My gaming box never sees the net so no virus' there. I don't see your logic here. Yeah I see your analogy, but consider the girl that I would be screwing, has her tubes tied or some **** like that.

Yup mostly single player stuff for me. I haven't done online gaming since 1nsane. Kinda got sick of all the haxors, and all the 13 year olds that just talk chit. I'll hit up a lan party once in awhile but I useually play Q3, or unreal.

Yeah the reason I ask is I just unistalled Norton, I couldn't stand the constant reminder to update for $40 every 5 minutes, it just kept popping up and i couldn't turn it off. It was no good to me because I wasn't going to update it. Alot of AV programs also clash with other software causing errors, they just seem kinda buggy... But I guess I'll check into AVG. I would just not run anything and restore if it got bad but I got this laptop from the GF and she has no idea where the software that came with it is...
