What would your \"top 10 items to bring\" list be?

I am working on a prsentation for a club meeting Thursday night and would like some input from you guys/gals. I plan to talk briefly about some basic things to bring with you and/or equip your rig with for a typical local weekend wheeling trip.

We have a lot of new wheelers in our group and a simple little presentation like this could be useful to many and a refresher for others as we begin to enter some of the best wheeling season.

With that in mind, what would you say is your Top 10 list? Feel free to include whatever you think is pertinent. To get started, think of (a) what is always the first thing you pack when getting ready for a trip or (b) the #1 thing you leave in your rig all the time and check to make sure you have before leaving?

I know Grim recently posted a great article on what to pack, but I need a condensed version for a 10-15 minute presentation. I just want everyone's highlights.

Thanks for any input you can provide for me.

I could present Grim's article in 10-15 minutes.
It is really done in point by point fashion, just strip out the colorful, but oh so lovable "Grim speak", and you will have yourself one fine condensed list! On second thought leave in the "Bitc# Box" portion... that has got to be my favorite part!!

Always have in the truck: Spare tire, jack, 4-way lug wrenck, asorted fuces, extra oil, tranny fluid, gear grease, tools, gas, water, blankets, CB radio, cell phone, and if I'm going into the woods, I take along some guns and ammo !!!!!!!! Never know when a tree will jump out and need to be shot !!!!!

    My opinion...

    1) tow strap (this of course assumes you arent wheelin alone!)

    2) jack (what type you need depends on your rig)
    3) full size spare + tire repair stuff (what good is a spare if you damage it too? I think we all know that we'd be inclined to keep on goin on the trail if we swapped the spare on.... at least if you damage it as well and you have repair kit, you have a decent chance that ONE of the 2 is repairable!)

    4) general tools
    5) vital fluids (motor/gear oil, brake, gas, PS, tranny, water etc)
    6) fire extinguisher
    7) comm (CB + cell phone)
    8) maps (hopefully of the area you just got stranded in!)
    9) a collection of nuts/bolts... and not just ANY nuts and bolts but ones that might actually be usefull. ie, if you sheared off a leaf spring bolt.. it'd sure be nice to have something better than duct tape to repair it with!

    10) spare parts, especially things like u-joints. You can only carry so many parts... so concentrate on the stuff that you NEED to get home (ie, what you need to get going in 2wd on-road).... everything else is just icing on the cake and "nice to have" with respect to parts. Big difference between breaking and the 4x4 portion of your trip being over... and being stranded out in the middle of no where! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

All I can think of for now. I left food off the list simply because water alone (and perhaps a little foraging) can keep ya alive for weeks... hopefully with all the other stuff at work you'll be out of there before then... if not, a nice tall hill and your radio/cell oughta be able to rescue u anyway...

One item that is always in my trucks is a flashlight. Perferably a mag lite or something nice and bright that you can use as a weapon too, if need be. Good maps are also a must.

Re: What would your \"top 10 items to bring\" list be?

for me: 0-20psi gauge, tow strap, 12 volt compressor, full size spare (well almost full size), jack, small basic tool kit (sockets, ratchets, end wrenches, screw drivers, pliers, duct tape, flashlight, hose clamps, fuses, BFhammer), first aid kit, fire extinguisher, road flares, TRASH BAGS, lighter, BFknife. All of these are always in the Blazer, if I am going really far out then I sometimes bring 2 spare tires, a rear driveshaft and yoke, all fluids, a lot more tools, and a tarp. I always have a cell phone too, and being in a group with other vehicles can be worth more than all the spare parts in the world if you are in a pinch.

Re: What would your \"top 10 items to bring\" list be?

I make sure to bring a toolbox with all the common tools to do most jobs on the truck, as well as the necessary things to change a u-joint (BFH & sockets). Gonna add a high lift and have to get a new spare.

    My Top Ten:
    1) first aid kit
    2) above mentioned tool box
    3) fire extinguisher
    4) mag light
    5) jacket, maybe extra clothes
    6) water and some food
    7) extra fluids for truck
    8) spare air cleaner
    9) misc bolts/screws, duct tape
    10) Soon to be adding axle shafts and axle u-joints
