What year did Blazers first have on-board computers for electric cards? I am looking to buy one without a motor and want to know if the engine set-up I have ready will be smog legal.
    thanks

87 was the first year of the TB injected blazers. These were the first ones to have a real computer. Some previous years had ESC (electronic spark control), but I am not sure when that started. Its not really a computer that controlls everything like the fuel injected models. I think maybe 81, but i'm not sure. Those came with quadrajets.

I have an 81 and its mechanical and vacuum operated. At one point they used computer (for lack of a better term) for an electric carb, to control the settings.

Your 81 should have an ESC module too...mine does, although it's disconnected now. All it does is retard the timing a bit when it senses 'knock'.

In 86 they had the electronically controlled carb, and in 87 they went to the TBI. My 85 had the esc, but it was bypassed years ago. They can't tell if you have the ESC or not, and they don't check, at least this has been my experience. I have passed emissions without it for years. Don't stop the ESC from you getting a vehicle. So I would say 85 and earlier and you should be computer free.
