Whats a \"Gov-Loc\" *stupid question*

The guy at 4wheel parts said "A 14bolt with a gov-loc is a ticking time bomb" is a gov-loc just a locker that engages when you stomp the gas? or is it an actual name of a brand or what? Thx for feedback

A "gov-loc" is actually a locker made for GM for the military by Eaton. GM uses it also on the trucks it pruduces. It uses centrifugal force to gauge how much "lock" it engages to the clutches. In other words it's an open-diff, posi, and locker all rolled into one. However, when it goes into full lock, you have to be spinning the tires pretty hard, and it engages suddenly, which can make them explode. They're OK for light wheeling, but I wouldn't use one for anything else. They're one of the weakest carriers used in an axle.

the 14 bolt gov-locs are stronger than the 1/2 ton counterparts. then again anything 14bolt is that much stronger than the 1/2 tons stuff

Mine in my '85 K30 is working just fine. Probably working too good, too. I can turn corners and the tires are chirping on one side, trying to grab traction.

When I was reading up on Lock-Right diffs I ran across some stuff on Gov-Locs. The stuff I read said the 3/4 & 1 ton ones are "ok", and the 1/2 ton ones are "time bombs". This is where I read it, has a picture and discription too: http://www.ring-pinion.com/gear/g0599.html

Not real sure about the comment that the Gov-Lock was made for GM, for the military??? The CUCV K5's w/ the 10-bolt rear axle had the Gov-lock, but the pickups with the 14 bolt FF had a Detroit locker.

I read about it in an off-road magazine. Can't exactly remember which one.

Sorry, the "gov" does not stand for "government", rather it stands for governor. The principal is that it uses a governor type design that allows the the differential to lock.
