What would be the best donor vehicle to look for that would have everything I need for a 5 speed swap into my 87? It currently has a 700 auto and 208 case. Also, what about a 205 case to put behind it?

What you want is a NV4500. The problem is that most of them are gone before you can get to them. They came out of late modle GM and Dodge HD trucks.

I forget the reason why, but you don't want the chevy nv4500. Get the Dodge version, but be careful looking on junked Dodges some of them have a Getrag 5 speed. DO NOT buy this transmission. Advanced Adapters will have everything you need to put it behind your engine, and mount a 205 behind it! Good Luck......Jon

    Chevy doesn't have as good of a 1st gear I don't think.

But I don't think the Dodge has a synchronized reverse either.

I have a chevy NV4500, it has a 6.34 non sychro first. The Dodge is 5.34 (or close). You would never use first in either tranny on the road anyway so either is fine. The chevy is sightly lower. both are incredible versions. Advanced Adapters likes to put down the chevy version because they can't get them anymore, only early chevy 4500's had the lower first gear. (the opinions stated above may or may not coincide reality) :)
