Ok, I have both Chiltons and Haynes for my truck (soon to get factory service manual too- thanks woody9). I have the feeling you bought the wrong Haynes manual. Does your title say 88-96 gm trucks? If yes, then you bought the wrong one. You need the one titled '73-'87 gm trucks. Trust me on this. It offers plenty of info about solid-axle tech.
I find myself looking in my Haynes manual more than my Chiltons, but that's just for ease of use. I like the information Chiltons provides better, but Haynes seems to be a little more organized. Chiltons has awesome diagrams in the back of axles and other things, drawn to show each and every piece.

When you can afford it, it's well worth the $ to get the factory manuals from www.helminc.com /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif

The factory manuals are definitely worth it. I personally have all three because I didn't know any better. /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif

Your '89 sub with the straight axle in front is the exact same platform/frame/drivetrain setup as '73-'87 pickups. If you buy a book saying it's for gm trucks from '88-later, you're getting a book dealing with the ifs trucks (that's when the pickups changed over....blazers and suburban's remained the V-series/old body style through '91)

If you read the book carefully it says for up to 87 trucks and then up to 91 1ton trucks subs jimmys and blazers. You'll notice that in the body section it show 89-91 front grills and dash boards. The shop manuals are great if you a fairly good mechanic and can understand them. If your not quite up to shady tree status then stick to the haynes manual.
