What\'s it take to run 42\"- 44\" tires? (edited)

I need help deciding what it will take to run 42"-44" tires on my rig this spring. I have 2 options right now and can't afford to do both. My first option is to put in a 465/205 combo and run the 4.10 axle gears. The other is to run the current 700/241 combo and add 5.13 axle gears. I don't do rocks, just mud and trails so I need some grunt from my TBI 350 but it's mostly for wheel spin. I'm leaning towards the 465/205 because I should be able to drive for a while until I get enough money for 5.13's... What do you suggest?

44's and a 350.....you won't be able to get much wheelspin ..... it's good you'll be running with an sm465. That will help. What;s the weight of your rig ?

You should be o.k untill you swap gears.

you will be fine for a short amount of time. with the low in the 465 you will have fewer problems than folks think.
i will be running a 465/doubler and 42's. with the new 40 spline D60 stuff comming out i may skip 42's and go right into 46's. but if i do that then i will go to 4.88 gears.

About 5,000 pounds, give or take. I may be ditching my Blazer tub in favor of a pickup cab and tubed flatbed rear.

I'd go with gears first but even with 5.13's and my 700R4 I'll have a hard time w/ the 350. I'm buying the 465, I don't have it in yet... so the money that would go for gears is going for the tranny. I figured out the crawl ratio's with the auto vs. manual tranny and the manual won big time. with the 4.10 gears and the 465/205 I'll have a 53.71 crawl, with 5.13's it's 67.20. With the auto and 5.13's it's not even close to either of those. Since I run mostly mud and wheel speed is key this should work out fairly well. I'm just looking for some input on how much I'm going to like or dislike the 4.10/465/205 and 44's together.

    Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Had a buddy with a 350 44's and 586 gears, th350. In deep mud those tires did not have the wheel spin it needed. We had the sm465 with 410 gears and a 468, it rocked. With your weight I think you'll come in between . Have fun with it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

According to the gear ratio formula, it'll be like having 3.08 gears and 33's... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I've been looking for a big block actually. I might be able to get one cheaper than the cost of re-gearing. If I find a decent 454 for sale locally I might put my TBI setup and rebuilt 700r4/241 for sale here to get it. I think big block torque would be better than the angularity the fuel injection allows.

[/ QUOTE ] yeah but that doesn't factor in the weight of 44s or the traction of those big meats. I may just run 4.10s forever but I will definetally get a big block before I slap anything bigger than my 39.5s in.

Why do you guys want big blocks so bad? I don't think anything could ever convince me to put a big block in my truck.

It kills me, everytime I try hijacking a post, I can't, but to do it by accident, it's easy.

Why couldn't we talk about Anna Kournikova the other day?
