What\'s the best coating to use on Axles, Frame, etc...?

I'm getting ready to swap in a 14-bolt in my '72. I'd like to paint it black or maybe blue.

What's the best coating to use on it?

    Powder Coat
    Spray Paint?
    Por-15?
    Rhino-Lining or Line-X
    Other?

    Thanks for your feedback...

From what I've read the POR is badass but not for things that need to look purdy because of the finish and you have to use a grinder to take it off....

Don't you have to put things through a furnace to be coated??? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

I got a gallon of just cheap gloss black enamel and sprayed the whole frame axles springs ETC. IMO if its shiney, its smooth and not much will stick to it for easy cleanup after a ride. I havent tested my theory yet since I have only washed the Blazer once in all the time Ive owned it, and what is on the frame is pretty well caked and baked on. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Had I sprayed down the underside when I get back from a ride, I am pretty sure it would have rinsed off decent.

So with POR 15 you have to use a grinder to get it off forreal? and its not pretty?

I used POR-15 when I restored my 74' CJ-5. It is a very tough coating if applied properly. Make sure to top coat it as soon as possible. Areas that were not immediately top coated peeled. Others that had been are still perfect. It applies well with a brush (you'll need alot of cheap ones).

Rustoliums Hammer Right rust inhibitor. I have a pic of the can if find it I will re-post.
I used it on the frame axles, springs, hangers, traction bars, back side of rockers, all the steering.... Basically everything under the truck. 5 cans @ 4.97 each. Very little rust has popped back through. Might need 1 or 2 cans to touch up next summer.
They have silver(met), dr silver/grey(met), black(met), muddy red color and I think yellow and blue? I got mine at a lowes store. Pretty good stuff IMO /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Well, I would have said a few layers of line X would have worked probably the best for the axles, but... its thick! and it needs to be applied by a professional. I'd go with POR15, I've had pretty darn good results with it. Top coating isnt necessary, but it gives it an extra bit of protection. Though 4 layers of por15 is pretty darn tough too.

First I took a wire brush to everything and started painting.
    OK, here come the pics

Well well before brush in bedliner

The brush in bedliner makes it easy to cleanup fast, just scrub with a tire brush or the brush at the car wash and it come back to the gloss look and the rocks dont make near as much noise.

POR 15 is the way to go, the finish is not bad, just alot of time involved in the prep, and if you don't follow the instructions it won't work.

I'm not a big fan of thick expensive finishes since they can be hard to touch up and hard to remove if you need to build-rebuild-modify. No matter what I'd make sure it's relatively cheap and easy to apply since you will be scraping the axles on stuff and they will need touch up.
