whats the deal with payloads?

    if my new truck....2001 silverado short wide V6...has a payload of 2000 lbs, why is it a half ton? 2000 lbs is one ton. do they compensate for people inside or the extra weight that a extended cab long bed 4x4 V8 might weigh? 1 tons are way more than 2000 also...whats the deal.

    i talked to a manufactuers rep and he told me it's what the truck can carry going from coast to coast in a straight line(rocks,hills,sand,etc.) it's like a general rule of thumb.that's what i hered i did,boss
