The difference is the bearing hubs, backing plates, rotor, and lugs number.

I think the outer knuckle is different (piece where the balljoints are mounted and the backing plate and spindle bolt to), at least the stud size as the knuckle on my 78 uses smaller nuts and studs (6 lug half ton) as opposed to the one in my old 80 10 bolt (8 lug 3/4 ton). The socket needed for the 3/4 ton was 5/8" and the 1/2 ton needed a 9/16 socket. May not be universal but was in my case.

    Re: What\'s the difference between 1/2 ton D44 and 3/4 ton D44?

Ok, so if I am understanding correctly, the axle shafts and gears are the same? And... since I have a 1/2 ton D44 w/ 4.56 gears in the front, and I really don't have the money to go D60, wouldn't it be better for me to go with the moly shafts and heavy duty brearings for trail use? I would rather leave the u-joints the weak link than my gears. I am looking for somebody to explain to me why i would want to go through the $$ and trouble of swapping over to 3/4 ton if the differences between the two are minor. I need some education here. Also, my rear is a 12b w/ 4.56 gears. So the big question is...is it worth swapping out for a 14b and rebuiding the D44 to 3/4 ton, or is it better to build what I have until I can get the D60 and 14bff??? Help!!!!

What size tires do you run or plan on running, what type of power, what type of driving style, and what type of terrain do you wheel in.

I will be running 38x12.50's by the end of the month. I currently have a tired 350, but the 454 is on the stand being built for some serious torque. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so I am an hour from the mountains, an hour from the ocean, and an hour or so from the desert. I mainly do trails, not a lot of rock climbing, and occasionally fling some mud. I am a defensively agrressive driver (yeah, right!) I don't beat my truck, but I ain't afraid to plant my foot if I have to.

With 38's and a healthy big block on the way you better start looking real hard for 14bff & D60. Your 10 & 12 bolt won't last long behind that combo especially if you plant the throttle. Make sure you carry spare axles for both axles, as you might need them.

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't too far off base. Now I just need to locate some chromoly shafts.....
