What\'s the whole purpose of lifting?

I know that many people do it solely for looks. But is it just to clear the body of the vehicle to install meatier tires on there or is there another purpose?

The purpose of a lift is to fit bigger tires, so you gain more ground clearance off road.

A body lift accomplishes this by just moving the body farther above the frame, and giving you more room for bigger tires.

A suspension lift accomplishes this by making the spring packs (leaf springs on GM solid axle trucks) taller giving you the clearance between the frame, body and tires. Added benefit of suspensions lifts is that if you choose wisely, you can improve ride and suspension flexability with a good set of spring packs.[IMG]

Re: What\'s the whole purpose of lifting?

I didn't go for the big lift in my case because there's no point. Here in Iowa I dont need to worry too much about ground clearance. That and I'm a wussy that wouldnt take it off-road for fear of damaging all my body work. I had a broken leaf spring and just put in ones that were rated for 3/4 ton duty. Gave me about an 1" lift and took out alot of the sway on hard corners. Another little perk of having a lift is that it is easier to crawl under and do work on it. Its a b!tch though to climp up to work under the hood.

Re: What\'s the whole purpose of lifting?

I lifted mine to keep the bottom of the Jimmy off the rocks. I wont go any higher than 4" because that is the most stable. I can still tow with the 4" lift on my burb. The burb is more for looks but still goes out wheeling every once in a while. I will be stepping to 38.5s on the Jimmy but will cut the fenders to fit. I need more clearance but dont want the negative affects of the higher lift with suspension

Why do you guys/gals think that I like riding around in those big red fire engines??? The back/rear facing seats provide the ultimate vantage point for those tight/low cut tops[IMG]

......And knowing is half the battle

LOL... I was wondering who would be first to pick on my little joke LOL. [IMG] It is actually pretty surprising to see one in a lifted truck around here. That would be cool though [IMG]. If they are higher then me then I guess they can look down on me [IMG]

A 4in lift with 35's. You will have to do some fender trimmin. If you do any serious offroading.. 4in lift with 33's and your Ok most of the time..I have a 4in lift and 33's and I have scrapped my fenders....Dan

If it ain't broke.......Don't fix it....

Re: What\'s the whole purpose of lifting?

33's and a 4" loft for flex. 4" and 35's would probably be nice with a little trimming if you want to flex alot.

Re: What\'s the whole purpose of lifting?

I had a 4" lift and 33"s, but it just wasn't big enough. So now it has 8" suspension and will soon have a 3" body lift and 44"s

Be prepared to cut your fenders.

My buddy has 12" suspension, 3" body, and 44x18x15 Ground Hawgs. His fenders aren't cut, and he has rubbed before.

    I'd say a good round # like 20" and 44's.
