What\'s your milage like with TBI?

Thinking of stripping TBI off of donor truck to put on carburated driver.
Hoping for a couple more miles out of it.

    Worth it?

I've got a 305 (yuk), in my '87. I get around 14 to 16, if I drive 60, but run it up to 75-80, and it drops to 12.

    350 TBI, SM465, 4.10, and 33's on my 7700lb crewcab nailed me a cool 10mpg highway and 7-8mpg around town. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

yep, i get 13 in town, dont do highway that much, but i have the 350tbi-sm465-np208- 3.08 rear ends, so that would help me on the highway more. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I get between 14-17 mpg. I've got a chip with dual exhaust, and 3.73 gears on 33" tires (but that will be changing to 36's).. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

Re: What\'s your milage like with TBI?

I seem to be at the lower end of the spectrum, but with none of the goodies.

    '79 K-5, 4bbl quadrajet carbed SB400, TH350, NP203 w/MM kit, 3.73, and stock 31's.
Getting me about 9.5 around town, and 11 highway.
The milemarker kit got me an extra mile on the highway, and nothing in town.
(Yes, I installed the hubs too.)

I was hoping that going 700R/NP208, along with the TBI swap would net me a significant milage gain.
This thing is getting expensive to operate.

Blazn88, that sounds pretty darned good from where I'm at.
Tell me more about your set-up.

    Who did your chip?
Or are you a lucky-duck that burns a wheeling chip, and a driving chip at home?

Re: What\'s your milage like with TBI?

With my TBI 350, 700r4, 3.73, 33" tires I get around 18 on the freeway at 75 mph
In town, 12 to 14 if I take it easy. But I live in a small town
What really helps the TBI get good milage is having overdrive. If you do the swap and have a non OD tranny you will probabally only pick up around 2 mpg over carbed.
But you get better driveability with TBI /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

88' 350tbi, 700R4, 3.42 and 31" tires and getting 11.5 in the city (never go on the highway) but thats with leaky valves and rings and a tranny that needs some serious attention. Hoping to get at least 14 in the city after the rebuild and vortec heads.

Add up the potential cost of a TBI/tranny/208 swap, then figure out how many gallons of gas you would buy, at todays gas prices. Then figure out how many miles you'd have to drive to save any money.

I think my swap (just engine) is going to take me 5 years to break even on, and thats if I get over 3MPG better.

New trucks are still getting 15/20 city/hwy depending on whose you look at, (Durango is really close to that) so you can't expect much better without some serious work.

If economy is an issue, buy a 40MPG econobox for daily use and save the truck for fun only. For the cost of injection/tranny/tcase swap, you can probably afford one.

No I don't burn my own chips, and I haven't looked at the one I have yet. It was in my Jimmy when I bought it..I was estimating on my mpg 'cause I haven't sat down and figured it out, but I drove it from Sac. to Redding and burned a little over half a tank doing 70 most the way, and that is about a 2 hour drive.. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gifYes the overdrive is great. I was telling my buddy to put an overdrive tranny in his '77 Blazer when it is time for him to get a new one.. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif
