    What\'s your oil pressure?

Finally got my oil pressure and other guages working...

Fired it up cold (ambient temp was 38 F) and my oil pressure was 47-50 psi. Once it warmed up it dropped to 35-38 psi at idle. If I gave it a few R's it climbed to mid 40's.

Is this about average for a 6.2 with 220,000 miles?

i was going to ask the same question, cause mine does the same thing. only after about 2 hours of driving, it drops to about 30 at idle, and then back up to low-mid 40's when driving.

my toyota did this, and it seemed to vary even more than the diesel.

Well, I may moderate this forum but most of this is still quite new to me too. I'm just kind of interested what an average 6.2's oil pressure would be to guage my own.

Hopefully we can get a good sampling...

If it was a small block I'd say my oil pressure is great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With relatively fresh oil, my needle sits about 3/4 of the way up the gauge until the motor is warm. Once warm it floats between 2/3 and 3/4s depending on RPMs. Even during hot operating conditions(like towing), it never drops below the halfway mark at idle.

I'd like to give you some PSI readings to compare to but you know that the Canadian trucks read in KPAs and I'm not smart enough to convert them. I do know that 770 KPAs is 112 PSI, though. That's what I pressure-test all my underground installs at. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

My 6.2 has about 125K miles on it, BTW.

my 6.5 runs at 20 at idle. about 60 at free way speeds. but that is going off a factory gauge that i dont completly belive.

The 275 kpa mark is 30 psi. 550 kpa is 60 psi. I don't know how well that jives with the math but the guages are most likely identical except for the stencilling. I really doubt they changed much else... I just swapped the metric gauges out for some imperial guages I had in another cluster. Now my oil pressure and temp is imperial and my speedo is still metric as is the odometer.

So far it sounds like mine is in the normal range for it's mileage.../forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

IIRC all of the later 6.5 (turbo) blocks have piston oil squirters, that shoot oil on the under side of the piston. This really drops the oil pressure at idle /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My '89 6.2 runs 60+ psi cold then will drop to 40+ at hot idle. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Both 6.2s I have owned would get to a max of 70 psi on cold days and by the time they warmed up would hover around 40 at idle with maybe a 10 psi increase on the highway.

    Re: What\'s your oil pressure?

Mine's at 279,000km. I get about 40psi cold idle or warm highway. Warm idle was only about 20psi.

I just switched from 15W40 to SAE 40W and picked up 5psi /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

    Re: What\'s your oil pressure?

    Sorry to correct you,BUT, 400KPa=58psi,200KPa=29psi,275KPa=40psi,550KPa=80psi.
    The formulas are: psi=KPa X .145 and KPa=psi X 6.9
    Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
