One of my buddy's got stuck on a sandy hill climb we were attempting. ended up digging his front d/s wheel in and his rear p/s. When he went to attempt to back up he could not get the shifter to shift into anything but forward gears. We ended up putting the t-case in N and I pulled him out backwards. Once he was out of the holes he dug he could easily shift into reverse.

Why? I figure due to some kind of binding but I would like to know for sure. He has asked me to try and figure this out for him. Tnx again guys.

Oh and the tranny is a th350 if it matters.

If it is stock, the gear selection is done with a rod that goes from the top of the steering column to the tranny. I imagine with it crossed up the linkage got tweeked such that it didn't have free range of motion -- and hence he could only get some of the gears. One reason people use cable shifters I guess.
