I'm looking to change out my 700R for a SM465 and was wondering where I should look to get one. Can i find descent one in the junkyards and how much am I looking to spend on one? What model trucks should I look for one in and what are the chances of finding one with an NP205 to put in too? Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure exactly what year they started, but for sure 73 and up could be had with the SM 465. The 205 was quite common behind the SM 465 up til 81 when the NP 208 was intoduced. By 89 the NP 241 was used behind the 4 speed.
The perfect donor would be a mid to late 80's one ton...SM 465 with 32 spline output, hydraulic clutch and 32 spline 205.

1/2, 3/4 and one ton pick-ups as well as Blazers and Suburban's all could be had with the SM 465.

I believe GM started using SM465s around '69-'70 (My '70 K-20 came stock with a SM465). You can use a two wheel drive tranny, you just need to ace the tail housing and get the appropriate adapter for your t-case. Drain the oil and make sure there is no water in it. Other than that they are pretty much bullet proof. You can tighten up the shifter a little by replacing the roll pins. I think they are 1/4" x 5/8". Different trucks had different shifters, you'll need one to match your t-case shifter so they don't hit. Call on the clutch core charge. A lot of pull your own part junk yards charge less for the used clutch than the shop charges for a core, and you have a sample. The flywheel and bell housing should be the same on 2wd and 4wd. The clutch fork may be different, don't know on '73 and up. Check the output shaft options for your application, but keep in mind if you have to you can buy a new output shaft.

definatly get a 205 bolted on it, any others is just a weak link. i got a 465 w/ a 205 at the local junk yard for 200 bucks. i have never seen one go bad, just make sure there isnt play in the lever when it is in gear. mine is a mechanical clutch, which wasnt too bad to install, minus ripping out your steering colum to put in the clutch pedal. i dont think they made them with hydraulic clutches until 87, not completly sure though. also be careful what clutch fork you purchase, i would recomend using the GM original one that you recieve from the salave yard. aftermarket ones that i found did not pivot correctly. beware. hope you get the 465 in your rig.
