Hey guys I'm new here I like this site glad I found it. I got a question I'm about to get a new 700r4 at the dealer but I read on tranny posts to get newer tranny(92 and up) because the older ones had more problems, if my truck is an 86 would a newer tranny fit and do i tell them to put a newer one. Thanks for your help and great site.

If you have an 86, you want one of the 87-91.
They were the same except they fixed a few problems they had in the earlier design.
In 92 and up they added electronics and stuff, if you don't want to deal with anything except a replacement go with 87-91.

    Yeah, what he said.

However, the 87+ trucks had TBI, so the lockup controls are slightly different. You'll probaby just need a pressure switch mounted on the outside of the tranny to allow lockup only in 4th gear.
