    Hello all...

I read with interest another post that provided a link to a site where a guy rates all the various oil filters. I now have a Napa Gold on my truck. I am now wondering which oil is best? I have heard Valvoline is good, and that Castrol is also. I have heard that Pennzoil and Quaker State have good marketing but aren't. Anyone have the straight dope? What do you all run in your rigs?

Always use mobil 1 non-synthetic 10w-30. I would say any oil as long as it's changed on a regular basis should do the job. Change mine every 3000 or twice a year, use ac delco oil fiters.

Yea that oil filter study was scary. I just took my Fram off so I could replace it with a Purolater. Anyways I've had good luck with Quaker State. I've heard badddd things about Penzoil.

    Another heated debate...

The same guys that did the oil filter study did a page on oil:
    http://minimopar.simplenet.com/oil.html
Be sure to read the above link.

I've been in several performance auto groups and have found that all prefer Mobile 1 Synthetic:

Grand Prix GTP Group: Mobile 1 Synthetic

Syclone/Tyhoon Group: Mobile 1 Synthetic (This is required from GM since the turbo cooks regular oils and is printed on the oil cap of all Syclones/Typhoons; ie-"USE ONLY MOBILE 1 SYNTHETIC 10W-30 OIL").

Talon/Eclipse DSM Group: Mobile 1 Synthetic

Yamaha YZF/FZR/R1 sport bike group: Mobile 1 Synthetic or Yamalube.

I realize that this stuff is not cheap but I want the best protection for my engine. The only time I wouldn't suggest synthetic is the 1st 3000 miles after an engine rebuild. For extreme cold conditions, synthetic makes sense.

I run MOBILE 1 in both the 68 Camaro (327,425hp) and 86 Blazer (305,160hp). Oil stays clean and holds up well to high temperature abuse.

Mobil 1 supposedly has the lowest ash content.

The Probe/MX-6 List guys all prefer Mobil 1....

I used to use Casrol alot, but I guess it has one of the highest ash contents!

I run Mobil 1 in my Probe and regular Mobil in my Jimmy.

I just started using Mobil1 Synthetic as of my last oil change and already i'm noticing that my 86 Jimmy is burning less oil. Plus i got a great deal on a case, ended up being around 2.34 per QT.

Here's another vote for Mobil 1 Synthetic. Been running it for years. On my daily drivers I change it once a year, whether it needs it or not. [IMG] Usually change the filter once in between full oil and filter changes. I change the oil more often on the trail rig 'cause there's so much dust in Colorado.

Corvette's used to have the "Mobil 1 Synthetic Only" label under the hood. Haven't peeked at one lately so I don't know if the new ones still have that recommendation.

Did you say once a year? I don't know about you, but I change mine every 3000 miles and I drive 12,000-15,000 miles a year. and thet equals 4 or more changes a year for me.

I am trying out the K&N oil filter, it works pretty good, and this is the second time I used it.

Definately mobile 1 synthetic! I own a 94 Corvette as a daily driver, and only once have I used anything other than Mobile one. It was Havoline synthetic, and I actually felt like the car ran slower, if that makes any sense!
For my K5, I use regular Mobile, cause between the valve seals, rear main seal, and the amount it burns, I'm adding about a quart and a half between oil changes.
I'm getting ready to buy a new GM target motor, and after I get it broken in, it'll be fed the mobile 1 synthetic also. 10W30 though, the vette uses 5W30.

Yep, once a year. Mobil 1 doesn't have all the waxes, additives and other crap that breaks down and needs to be flushed that you'll find in refined motor oils. They claim you can run it for 25K miles before it needs to be changed. I usually go about 7,500 miles and change just the filter. Then at 15K miles I change the oil and filter.

Ran my '87 Blazer that way and it still ran like a champ when I traded it in at 125K miles. The '91 S-Jimmy's been on a strict diet of synthetics since it's 2nd oil change at 6K miles. All oil changes since then have been at 1-year intervals. It's still going strong at 116K miles. I had the top end apart at about 75K miles when I was installing an Edelbrock intake and the inside of the engine had no sludge or other nasty stuff visible.

Man, all you guys swear by Mobil 1 Synthetic. That has to say something about the product. I don't think I could go a year between oil changes though. Every 3,000 miles is all I've ever known and it'd screw with me not doing it? How much is synthetic per quart on average?
