    which q-jet/carb? $500 to spend

I just started looking for a carb for my motor. I wanted a holley off road carb, but was informed that a q-jet is better. So I went in search of a q-jet from holley, i couldnt find one at jegs. Do they make them? Also are they all universal bolting? or do i need to find one specificaly for my engine?
    Thanks.
Oh and the motor revs to about 5000, and should make abour 400hp/550tq, what cfm should i get?

I have to say, I really like the Holley Avenger series carbs.

I have a 670 Street Avenger on my Challenger. It works awesome! It's pretty tuneable, not as much as a classic 4150 but it's got some real nice features. All I had to do was jet it up(I think it came w/ 65-68s, I put 72-76s in) and adjust the vacuum secondary.

I might put that carb on my blazer though and put a 700 double pumper on my car. I was told it could use more carb. I have a friend with an O2 sensor Air/Fuel meter and I have a bung in my exhaust, we'll probably do some more tuning on it this april.

But I would say go with the truck avenger...

Just to throw in my worthless $.02, DAMN thats a lot of money for a freaking carburetor that started in production in 1965! :)

Thats the kind of money that will get you converted to TBI just about.

If there are automotive swap meets around you, $5 isn't unreasonable for a used Q-jet that can be rebuilt for $20 in parts, maybe additional $40 to have it bushed.

The stock 750 or 800CFM will be fine for you. Better torque with the 800 apparently.

You are going to be running a 500 Caddy right? If so I would not do TBI on it.

I have 2 friends with 454's that have TBI setups on them. They are both better then stock HP's and the TBI will not support the power of the BBC. They do great on monster torque at the low end but the TBI will not flow enough air to allow alot of upper RPM HP's.

I have been in both vehicles and they both flatline for power around 3500 RPM. A bigger motor is just going to compound the problem.

They are pricey , I just bought one versus any conversion toTBI over the time factor , I drive mine to work everyday , and didn't want to bother bushing mine . I have time to bush it for my project though :D

OK, caddy motor is going to cause some issues, especially a 500 lol.

I'd suspect that with a motor that large turning that high, even the 454 setup won't help you, so I will retract that comment about $350 or so buying you TBI. :) I have seen TBI setups for small blocks running around that cost though.

Whenever the classifieds on thirdgen.org start working again, that would be a good place to check for cheap TBI though, as well as our own for sale section.

A motor that big I'd go with the 800 variant...but CFM vs. CID wasn't the determining factor in GM's eye apparently. If buying one brand new, and the motor is built, the 850 Q-jet Edelbrock makes may be an even better bet if buying new.

Both my vehicle have Quadrajets from Autozone on them. One has over 70k since it was installed. Little, if any tuning, required and will start right up after install. Best of all---CHEAP!!

I did a quick search on their website for a '74 ELDO and this came up.

I haven't heard anything about those in real life, I don't anyone that has one. But they look good! I read a magazine article about them and it showed all the stuff they go through on them.
