Who has made a Bikini top for their for full \'vert?

So here it is ~102 degrees today. I drove around for lunch... and I AM BURNT RED!!! DAMN!

So, time to make a Bikini. I went to the local upholstery shop... she suggested I get two yards at 54" wide, and a channel piece and bolt this to the top windshield frame.

    SunTOP material is $29.95 a yard, x 2 = $60.00 Bikini!

Silly me, I asked how much for them to make a custom one... ~$400.00!! LOL

    Any other suggestions???

    TIA

i've got a bestop soft top for my 73 and i LOVE it its a full top snaps to the top of the windshield and to rails that are just screwed to the flat spots where the hard top sits i never put the hard top on any more thing is they cost like $2-300 but its the best money i have spent the best thing is the sides and rear roll up so u can use it like a bikini top (thats the normal configuration of mine) only down fall is that if you live somewhere where it rains heavily you get wet because the pieces over the driver and passanger doors dont seal up at all but the back when snapped down is water tight and nothing back there gets wet if you want pix let me know and ill try to find out who still sells them if you want just my 2c

Yeah, I know... Of course I can't find them for "$2-300"!!!

I have only been able to find them for $399.00 +

Besides, I already have plenty of rust around this rig, so I don't want to be drilling any holes in the sides. If I was to get a soft-top I want the fast-track = $499.00+

I made one, I used sunbrella material, it cost me $20 for a 60" wide yard. I cut it to fit and sewed up the edges for strength on a sewing machine. I put some grommets in the corners and some snaps up front. I snap it to a piece of wood that I screwed onto the tabs that hold the top to the windshield frame. I use tie downs in the back to some eye bolts on the bed rails. It works real well at keeping the sun off me. Its also pretty water resistant. I do have a cage over the drivers and passenger seat that makes it a bit easier to have but a roll bar would do.

I made this part out of 1/2" conduit. I welded 3 tabs (with bolts welded on) on that will mount up where the hardtop mounts (with wing nuts). The fabric will wrap around the bow and be sewn. The conduit allows the top to "seal" somewhat against the stock rubber seal. The back part will hang over the rollbar and will have straps like a Jeep bikini top.

If you have a full cage then have a piece of canvas or top material cut and sewn to just fit inside the front part of the cage. Then put small grometts every 3" or so. Then use parachute cord and wrap it around the cage a through the grometts and work the cord tight after you get it all the way around the top.

The only drilling on the STC tops is on the windsheild header. A place for the bracket on the top of the bed rail that will be hidden by the hard top and on the tail gate. That's for both the snap and fasttrac. The snap top has rails that bolt donw off the original holes and the snaps go to the rails. www.specialtytop.com they have the install sheets available in PDF form on the site.
Northern is a place like Harbor Frieght. http://www.northerntool.com/ I happen to live where they have stores but there is the online store (it is sort of like 4wp and they are a seperate entitiy under the same name). I think you can request a catalog.

WHAT?!?!?!? That's the reason I have been passing on SNAP TOPs!

    AAWWWwww crap!

So both the fast-track and the Snap Top don't drill into the SIDE body?!?!? SHEESH! My friends '72 has the funny snap holes on his side body. I thought that was because of the Snap-Top. He mast have a different brand!

    DANG!

Decisions, decisions... Well, I see my doubler is coming!! WOOHOO!!!

I just got off the phone with STC.

The Snap top uses two bows, The fastrack uses three bows shaping the soft top as the hard top.

The SNAP-top does indeed use "many" snaps on the side bed rails.
The Fast Track uses "a few" bolt holes to bolt the fast track to the bed rails.
Both soft tops require front and rear rails be installed. The back rail can be left on, where as the front rail will need to be removed to put the hardtop back on.

    SHEESH!

Back to making my own Safari style soft top then!

Sounds like you're on the right track. I wanted white for mine, black didn't sound right for the Arizona sun/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. I also happen to know how to use a sewing machine- If you have one, that would be helpful too, if not get someone you know to help sew it up.

I learned back when I was in the military. Paying a shop to change insigna on uniforms started getting really expensive
