My steering box had not cracked the frame yet, so I got ahead of the game by performing a minor frame mod while the engine was out.

Do you think it will hold /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't know Steve... Looks kinda weak to me! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif What's the deal? Couldn't you find an old bridge girder to weld in there? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

So basically what you've done is that if (hopefully never) your truck gets wrecked in the front that corner will never, ever, ever bend. So basically if you are gonna hit somethin hit it with the left front. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif That's a pretty cool idea. Gonna have to take that idea and run with it I think. Good luck to y'all.

Oh by the way, since it's dark and I can't visualize it, do you think this little modification can be done with the motor in the truck? Thanks in advance.

I think you could. You would just have to do more of the work from below.

It is definately a weld in brace..I used 1" solid bar and drilled it out to accept the 7/16" bolts. The bars are 4" long and are welded to the outside of the frame behind the box as well. Both frame rails are boxed with 1/4" plate and the new crossmember is 2"x4" 3/16" wall tubing. This is the same fix I used on my ex K5 when I ripped the box from the frame at the Superlift park in Arkansas. I figured to save the aggravation of driving 9 hours with a steering box that was minimaly attached to the frame with the Suburban. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

I did the same modification to my K5 with the engine in place. The welds on the top of the tube were less than pretty to say the least. It wasn't really that much more difficult than with the engine out.

Looks like one hell of an idea. If the price is right, I'd be all over that idea.

I could replicate the parts but it is a definate weld in repair. The parts should be cheaper than a steering box brace. If there is enough interest I am game for making up a parts kit. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I had to stare at that damn picture for about 5 minutes before I could see what was going on. Quit painting things eye catching red! That definitely is huge, and it looks like a great solution.

What would be nice would be something for a 1st gen. Even with the factory brace in there I'm still worried.

    Steve,

I'll take one! While we have the S-TON at your shop, I want to do this to my frame. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I had no idea you were using that bar between the framerails. Looks stout to me.
