I've been thinking about this some recently, and it might be nice to have some 'extra' stuff laying around in case SHTF (or even natural disaster). My current job with the USAF would give me other priorities, but this list of stuff would be more useful once I separate from the service.

This is what I was thinking:
Flack vest + helmet -- useful for intended purpose and other sources of shrapnel
Gas mask + canisters (or at least my respirator) -- dust/fire/smoke and NBC
    Tent and tarps
    Sleeping bag and blankets
    MRE's + some canned food
    Water purification equipment + canteens
    Quick-start firelogs, waterproof matches
    Hatchet
Jerry Cans for gas + water
    550 chord, caribiners
    first aid items
my firearms and plenty of ammo (12 gauge, .22, .357 magnum)

The way I see it, with a short list of items like that, I could easily fit 90% of the items in a good ol A-bag. Everything could be loaded up in the Jimmy and I could be on the road in short notice, and be prepared enough to self-sustain somewhere for a while. Albeit it's not a complete list, but the core is there.

Anybody else have a similar list or keep something similar on-hand?

The way world events are, and considering lack of preparation for natural diststers, it's a wise decision IMHO.

For instance... if I were trying to seek shetler from a big-arse tornado ripping up my town, a flack jacket and helmet wouldn't be a bad idea at all!

Likewise, when I get out of the military I plan on going back to VA. Having that stuff will easily allow me to "run to the hills" in anything from a hurricane to another large attack (on DC, Norfolk, the Homestead, Camp David, etc).

I'm thinking I might add some truck parts and my tool bag to that list, but I can't think of something that I might break that would be easy to replace.

LoL..you guys have no idea. Ive been into "preparedness" for over 5 years now.

Alot of my Blazer build up is based solely on SHTF. It is self contained. Ive got food, water, shelter, hygene, first aid, water purify, ,etc etc etc. All this stays in the truck at all times. Essentially all I have to do is grab my keys and I can sustain for a week jus out of my K5. One day Ill do a break down of the gear and list it here. When all the gear runs out and/or fails, then its time to get primitive. We go on campouts several times a year (ive posted in the outdoor section of here b4) and we work on living off the land. Its not glamorous and most times its pretty nasty (the food mainly). If anyone is interested, I belong to a Survival Forums. Its part of a gunforum. http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=1&f=123

Im DIE-TRYIN on there, I have the same avatar. There is some pretty good info on there. Some of the BS ya have to sort thru. Another forums is FrugalSquirrel, I use to be on there, but they can be real jackasses on there at times.

And yes I can go on and on and on about this. lol

Break out a list sometime, too. I'm definately interested.

My K5 work was along the same train of thought, ability to power through doomsday and head to the hills if necessary. Then logic took over and I realized there ain't no hills to head to on Long Island anymore, and I ain't wheelin' through bridge and tunnel gridlock during SHTF. So now I fantasize about renting a backhoe and building a 20ft below grade concrete bunker complex with a tunnel back to the house...

I have to build a new facility for my job, and my boss keeps breaking my chops cause I wanted to build it completeley underground and secured against natural disasters and hostile threats...

This will probably be a rare thread I save...

All our valuable stuff will be in a concrete vault under the basement floor, built to survive total structure collapse and resist unauthorized access.

They were good. And since it's Tuesday, they were $0.35 ea. Good thing too, cause my buddy paid for my dinner cause I helped him rip his girlfriend's Honda apart. God I hate working on those things. Worse than a damn Jeep.

yeah..with the democrats running congress, there will be no more hurricanes or terrorist attacks.. John Kerry said so..

Personally, I keep enough food, water, and ammo in the house to sustain us if the worst happens.. I'm not in a flood zone, so I don't plan on having to evacuate. I can live on warm beer and twinkies for as long as I have to. If worse comes to worse, I have blades, a crossbow and a blowgun I can use for various purposes.

About the worst that can really happen to us is an attack on the nearby perry nuclear plant on lake erie..in that case, preparation doesn't much matter.
