This is where someone who got to spend substantial time with aviators would make a crack about them not getting their crew rest, but I'm gonna refrain.

It could be just all the fawkin sand they are having to deal with, though I just caught on my update that we have an Apache down and they said the chopper hit a virtual hornet's nest.
UPDATE-They just said this Apache had mechanical problems.

One of CNN's embedded journalists is with the Apache team that hit that hornets nest. All the birds made it back and all had taken multiple small arms fire, one took an RPG into an engine and just barely made it back.

I'm guessing the sand can't be easy on these things though.

they have said like 3-4 were mech. problems, why so many? it is so depressing to see us and the brits have lost more lives to mech. problems than opposition, i just feel bad for the men who died at the hand of a mechanic. especially that many.

[/ QUOTE ]I kinda feel for the mechanics too.. my cousin was an F-16 mechanic, and anytime one of those went down, the whole team was sequestered, and scrutinized, until they determined what the cause was, and wether they were going to court martial them or not.

people make mistakes, and from what they were saying, the first 3 or 4 days they were there, no one slept in over 60 hours... mistakes are made after that long without sleep.

would you rather hear that the iraqi's are actually shooting our copters down?

Take a gallon of sand and dump it in your intake. No, not really, but that is the stuff they are going through. When we would go over to the Big Island of Hawaii, the training area is a volcanic area, when we got back we would have to clean the air filters, big metal filters with an air hose. We would have our own dust storms in the motor pool. Those choppers and vehicles are getting it twice as bad.

Well, I know it was a pain in the rear to blow out V-Packs on the M1A1s, I can just imagine what an airborne turbine engine picks up during operations.

    dude thats not cool

seemingly you are implying that you could somehow fly better. Allthough it dose suck that we have lost men and a few hunks of meatl.

[censored] happens and accidents too. They have lots of accidents. Way more peopls crash in cars and stuff anyway.

and to boot ive been involved with a helicopter crash !

lets not critisize our soilders, its not like a F&*(ing vacation for em.

Duke, I don't think anybody was implying anything. It's just kind of "gallows humor" that us older farts get after we been thru a few years and have lost track of how many times we coulda been killed ourselves. If ya can't kinda giggle in the face of death...you would end up too scared to go outside! You'll see what I mean after a few years. Just off the top of my head, I thought up 7 times I coulda been killed or seriously mangled, and THAT was just while typing this!! /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

Ed is right, aparently you missed the boat, and Bubba kinda did too, thats why i didnt respond /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif it was meant in the context of
" Ya right, like I believe they are all accidents "
but I guess next time i will have to be more direct. and I was right, they are now admitting most were caused from stray bullets that "caused" the mechanical problems. they didnt want people to get upset that fast when it just started /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif and i see nowhere where i criticized our soldiers, hell, i was one for plenty long, and engaged in plenty of places, but it isnt like i need to spout off the list of the tactical engagments i was in to prove i have a right to my opinion.

It's all the sand. It eats the birds up without mercy. I did a project for a company here that was making ceramic turbines for the military and shipping them over to the Gulf during Desert Storm. The sand is merciless. It doesn't matter how much they maintain them, eventually, the sand eats them up. It's a bad deal man. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif
