    why 17\" wheels?

I'm just wondering why you see more people going for 17s? Is it because of tire selection? Or is it to run larger brakes? Do they help ride/turning abilities? Thanks for the help

bling....................pure bling.............no actually i believe the 17" has a safety bead like 15's so you get the driving benefits of a 16.5 (less sidewall flex and sway) benefits of 15's(safety bead IF im not mistaken) and on larger tires a 15" wheel looks kinda lost up in the middle of it, whereas a 17 wont.

I like the smallest rim I can fit for off road because more side wall means more flex and better fold over obsticals. But the bigger rims I like for on road handling because they have less side wall flex.

I wouldn't care one way or another if the 17s were as cheap as 15" rims are and the tires were the same price, I'd go with the 17s just because they'll clear any size brakes. The manufacturers are never going to give up on charging more for the 16 and 17 inch tires so I'll just keep grinding and fitting 15s.

Im thinking abought a 17 in rim so that I can run a set of the pro comp 37/13.50 on my truck for DD use and keep what I got now for play.

17s are easier to ballance. The less tire there is the easier it is to ballance.

so there seems to be no real reason except brakes, balancing and beads to choose 17s over 15s. Just personal choice then.

a 17" aluminum wheel is lighter than a 15" steel wheel with 2" less sidewall on a tire that saves a ton of weight and you get better control of the flex of your tire instead of it being sqwashy it really doesnt make that big of a difference for us fullsize guys but for comp rigs it does. I run the 17"s on my tow rig so I can get the 37-12.50-17s thats the only reason.

its also an inch closer to the rocks and unless you get forged aluminum wheels they are prone to cracking when bounced of rocks. My 15 steels aint gonna crack anytime soon. Forged aluminum wheels are GREAT, unfortunately they cost a freakin fortune. You can get 4 cheap steelies for the price of one good forged aluminum wheel. Someday when I am daddy warbucks I'll prolly run AL wheels too, until then its all about steel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
