Historians, sociologists and comparitive religon gurus all tell us that most human beings have a fear that when they die, that is the end. Everyone wants to believe that there is reincarnation, or a journey to heaven (or hell) etc etc etc. Why is that? I'm not talking about fear of physical death... pretty much any living creature fears death... I'm talking about the end of an existance on every level (physical, emotional, and spiritual). I just don't get it. I truly believe that when I die, thats it. Lights out, game over, do not pass go, do not collect $200... end of story.

That idea isn't particularly scary to me, and makes me value the time I have here. Frankly, if I really believed that my time here on Earth was pretty much irrelevant and that heaven was what it was all about, I wouldn't really give a crap about anything happening here. 200,000 people die in a tsunami? oh well, the afterlife is cooler anyway. 3000 guys die in Iraq? oh well, heaven is a really cool place. That just doesn't fly for me... it seems like a cop out and something that has grown out of fear. Anyone else mystified by this? Just seems weird.

If I understand what you are saying(You personally do not think there is anything, space, heaven or hell after biological death has occured), well then, I hope you are right.

Some things I have done in my life I am not proud of at all, horrible things to innocent people(*disclaimer* I have not murdered anyone).

Although I have tried to do other things to better myself, I still know where my eternal resting place will be.:(

based on everything I have read, ALL of the stories/legends/beliefs about after-life etc are nothing more than an extension of this basic human fear. Its like when the Greeks had a God of the Sea to explain tsunamis, and nasty storms. They didn't understand it, and feared it, so they made a religous construct to explain it. In this case, people are afraid of The End... so something has to be constructed so that it isn't really the end. :dunno:

No one living knows for sure... and I am honest enough with myself to know that I don't know either... but I truly believe that when biological death occurs, thats it. Game over.

Anyway, I don't want this to turn into a big religous debate... I'd just like to hear other people's thoughts.

Other than getting into religion, I have no answers. Unlike alot, if not most Christians, I do not sit on a pedestal and argue with everyone about Heaven and Hell.

I just deleted alot of stuff. I do not want to HIjack this thread. I am leery about getting into a religious discussion. I think it was agianst forum rules, right?

jekbrown if you want to know my belief you can pm me. If not, I am cool with it.

Not trying to cut hairs here... but my interpretation of the forum rules is that bringing religon up is fine... they just don't want threads that are big religous food fights.

I don't want a big arguement either... that said, if your personal beliefs about biological death have a religous backing, thats fine. I'd still like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Humbly and respectfully, I have NO FEAR of dying. In fact, I look forward to it, because then I can face God and see my Savior Jesus Christ of Nazareth face to face, and I will experience a totality of peace I've never had. Because of what Yeshua did for me, I am now at peace with God my Father, and am striving to be the best I can for him, working my salvation out with trembling, for God is all powerful and Holy. I try to show His love for all mankind by actions and words, and not by ramming religion down another's throat. It's love that reaches out, helps, cuddles and saves. Not rules and regs. Death is not the end, but the end of the beginning. Death is the beginning of life eternal. Life away from sorrow, pain and emnity.

Heaven is not made out of fear or come from fear. Heaven always existed. It is man's religious regs and sin's twisted power that causes fear to enter the picture. Satan works his lies to keep you from the thruth. Those who know and have a relationship with Christ have no fear, for those fears have been relieved. Fear comes from those who have not yet understood, either by choice or divine providence. Heaven is a pretty cool place. So cool, I cannot comprehend it's majesty. In all its splendor I know it has its fun side. I just know that God is the best wrencher and has one heck of a K30. He's got the biggest lift, the most powerful motor and drivetrain, the largest Boggers and the mudholes, trails, rocks, and snow are so deep and wonderful to play in. That's how my Daddy helps me build my rig, because He's already built one Himself.

Maybe, if you stilled your spirit, quieted your thoughts and listened, you'd hear him knocking on your heart. Jesus isn't religion. He is the Son of the Living God, and He died for you. To save you from separation. To save you when and while you were yet lost. C'mon home and let Him work miracles for you. If there is one thing HE isn't, is religious. He's about selfless love. Love for YOU.

That's what separates HIM from all the other proposed dieties. What have they done for their followers? Nothing like what God did for YOU.

    Manny

It's something I just deep down know.

To avoid turning this into a fight, I don't have fear of the end. By the time I go, I want to have done and seen everything that I'd like to. Heaven or not, in the end you can't do anything else on earth, and that's what I'm enjoying here and now.

First let me get some stereo types out of the way about myself then.

I am a Christian and yes pauly383 I agree that the majority, no, ALL churches have hypocrites. for example, dad, BIG TIME CHURCH GUY, left my mother for a youth director from another church, then my church kinda went Hush Hush about it. They basically did not know what to say. It took me 9 years to step back into church. This was just over 2 years ago. Now I am a youth Minister. My Sunday school teacher and I both agree, stay in church long enough and you will get hurt.

Second. I do not sit and judge others that Christians would call SINNERS. It is not my place. If you read the Bible, Jesus did NOT like to hang out with the religious folk. He ate at the homes of theifs, whores, prostitutes, cripples, tax collectors and so on. Why? Becuase these people were who he cared about.

I care not if you like to drink, cuss, watch R movies or XXX for that matter. Personally most Christians are judgemental and it drives me crazy. They have no right to point any fingers at anyone for anything they find "Sinful". Point in case. Why should I judge someone else about Anything when I still have a porn addiction problem that started when I was 5 years of age. Yes 5. I was molested at age 4 and subjected to porn by age 5. The molesting was by 5 different people until age 10 or so. It is MY conviction not to look at other women besides my own wife. It has nothing to do with ANYONE else besides me and God. I still struggle with this. But I have no right to tell you you shouldn't be doing so and so.

Now for the question at hand. What about the END?

I know what has happened in My life and it was not Fear of the End. It was the peace that God put into my life when I decided that He is my God and my purpose on this earth is to live for Him and no other. My purpose is to chill with who ever and let God show through my life instead of pushing God onto others. I am not in the "saving people from Hell by arguing whether heaven or hell exist" business. But rather telling people who ask, there is life after death and my life will be with Jesus Christ for eternity because He paid the price for me through a physical death.

Here is the kicker. If you do not believe this way, I will say "that's cool". and If you begin to think harder about it and you want more insight of my opinion I will ALWAYS try to answer any questions you want to ask me about anything. Just shoot me a pm. Any SERIOUS question.

    There is my $.02.

I have no fear of the end. I am a religious person, but like Paully, have better things to do than sit in a room full of hypocrites weekly.
Honestly, I don't believe in an "end". It's not a novel concept. Infinity, baby!!!!

Although there are hippocrates that go to Church, going to Church doesn't make you one. I see nothing hippocratical about sitting down once a week and confronting my faults as a person and then asking a divine being for assistance in becoming a better person.

Jekbrown has pretty much the same belief that my brother does, which is that when your number's up - it's final. We've discussed this many times and I have a hard time accepting that because, to me, it's just giving up. Nobody knows for sure what's going to happen. However, when I hit the end in this world, I will be moving on to the next.

That's probably not the most Orthodox view, and hasn't always been mine. But it's pretty much where I'm at right now.

now we're actually getting somewhere. :)

and yes, I am agnostic. IMO those few are the most honest individuals I have come across. People who swear up and down that they know everything there is to know about both this world and the 'world beyond' scare the living **** out of me.

I think, that with a few exceptions, the majority of people you will find on this site will admit that they don't know everything, and are just good, hard working individuals that believe what they believe and don't have a problem with others.

Discussions such as this ARE possible, as long as everyone keeps themselves in check.

I'm happy to see this one going well so far.

I've never had a fear of death.. either before or after I "got jesus".. I've always been a stoic guy, and I figured that whatever happens after I die, would happen regardless of my feelings about it..If I end up with mansions and streets of gold, great.. if I'm worm food, that's ok too.

Christianity has ( for me ) some components to it that make it a kick ass belief system in the here and now, so I see no need to overly - focus on the afterlife... my fellow believers think I'm nuts, but I'm more about how the holy ghost towing service can get people out of the ditch now, rather than worrying about being raptured up later..

As to why people fear the end, I'm sure that there are as many answers to that as there are people.. I guess the biggest reason is that people fear the unknown, or more likely, they fear whatever circumstances might surround their death.. again, I'm guessing because It's not something I fear myself..

    Tom
