Why do people call trucks with 350\'s tow rigs?

I am talking about all of the ads you read that say "Tow Rig" in the title. You click on it and find that it is a late 70's to 80's Chevy with a 350 V8. These are about the weakest engines in stock form. SO much smog crap on them they barely put out more power than a Ford Focus. Why do people call them tow rigs?

Cause some people tow with them /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I mean, if you saw a 1989 Honda Accord Tow Rig, then yeah that would be strange to me, but they probably used there truck to tow stuff around...

Probably because when they see the hitch under the rear bumper, they automatically assume (!!!) that its a tow rig. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

With the proper gearing and a decent build-up a 350 can haul all kinds of stuff.

Re: Why do people call trucks with 350\'s tow rigs?

Hmm, our company tow rig is a 1979 F250 dump with a stock 351 and it had been doing towing duty for 15 years for our trailer and backhoe which together weigh a little over 9,000 lbs. It still has the original motor and drivetrain except for a rebuilt front diff that grenaded one winter while plowing. It also routinely hauls 2-3 ton of quarry dust for us to mix cement to pour monument foundations. Chevy rigs can't do this? Maybe there is something to "built ford tough" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

EDIT: it is on it's second receiver hitch though, last one gave up a few months ago.

Re: Why do people call trucks with 350\'s tow rigs?

A 350 will tow. But if you ever pulled with a big block or Turbo diesel you'll re-think using small block. I have pulled with, and still do, with a 350. All depends on how well you want the truck to handle the load, especially on hills. I've also used the 350 as a reason to hold off on a travel trailer, was gonna wait until I installed a cummins.

    My '94 K1500 ext cab with 6.5TD/4L80E and 3.42s pulled better than my '77 K30 350/sm465 with 4.10s. And my 350 was a low mileage '93 LO5 flat top/roller cam motor.

I wonder why people go thru all the hassle of ordering a ext or crewcab dually, loaded, and only get the 5.7L engine. My brother in-law is using a '96 K1500 ext cab with 5.7L vortec for ocasional pulling duties. He is looking at getting a 6.5TD truck for pulling, he remembers how well my '94 did.

My 92 Yukon is my tow rig and it has a 350. Once the SBC blows and I need a new motor, I'm going BBC, but for now the 350 tows my 16' flatbed and Trans Am just fine! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It all depends what you tow .. not everyone loads 6000 pound Blazers onto a trailer.

Gearing makes all the difference in the world. GM did offer a 350HD in the 3/4 truck line. If ordered with towing package you got better gears, AUX tranny cooler, Aux engine oil cooler and stronger springs. It is a tow rig.

Re: Why do people call trucks with 350\'s tow rigs?

350 is the greatest small block ever made, and when you think about it- 350ci is really not small, compare it to other engines like furds 4.6s or 5.0s, still atleast 48ci bigger yet that 4.6 can pump out ome power. now think again, 5.7l compared to 1.6l seems pretty big now? i know it's not a 7.4 or 8.1 but it can still pump out some serious horsepower with a little bit of work.

oh and i've towed with mine and i'd like to more to soften up these damned superlift springs. . . /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Because that's how the manufacturer classified them. Lots of 1/2-ton trucks could be ordered with "towing package" which gave you the hitch, wiring, aux coolers, etc.

My yellow truck had a 350 in it when i first got it with the stock 4.56 gears and the 4-speed it pulled anything I hooked to it( 10,000lbs stock trailer with about 12 cows in it which weigh between 600 and 900 lbs up a grade that goes from 4800 ft to 10,600ft in 16 miles at about 25-30 mph) not fast but it would do the job

my 95 is a tow rig. It has almost absolutely no emissions crap. No air pump, limited vaccum stuff, no cat. 88+ 3/4 tons don't come with that stuff(well they do have cats but not mine). 4.10 rears help too
