Its a Ford and a 14FF can be found 99% easier, faster and cheaper than a Sterling rear. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I've never seen a single one in the junkyard. 14 bolts are a dime a dozen. I've got one in all three of my trucks. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

seems alot of people on here drive fords daily, must be the solid front axle. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifso is it worth it with the way 60 front ends are going away, why not something else? is there something wrong with the sterling front axle? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif to /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

Re: WHY DOESN\"T ANYONE USE A STERLING 10.25 REAR???

Lol I saw a bronco at the local 4wd show with a Ford HP 60 front and a 14 bolt in the rear. Owner was talking to me about his rig and I was like, "HEY, WAIT A MINUTE, IS THAT A 14 BOLT?"

    His reply?

"Sure is, I love 'em. Cheap, too!!"

there is someting wrong with the sterling front axle seeing as there is no such thing. they are only rear. the 14B may be a boat anchor but the detroit loker is like $100 cheaper and thay are a dime a dozon.

Re: WHY DOESN\"T ANYONE USE A STERLING 10.25 REAR???

14BFF's are stronger and heavier. Plus they had probs. with the bolts backing out of the ring gear/carrier on those sterling axles. Besides why put a ford part under a chevy when a 3/4 14BFF bolts right in and is better anyway.

Boggerless, A ford truck that has a 10.25" sterling rear should have a D60 front axle.

Re: WHY DOESN\"T ANYONE USE A STERLING 10.25 REAR???

Swapped in a 10.25 Sterling into my 90 Bronco rear. It was a semi-floater and later when I found that there were minimal lockers made for it, I regretted it. Had I gone with the full floater, I may have stayed with the Bronco, swapped in a D60 front end for the TTB, and I wouldn't be here. But, the GM products are just too easy to work on and readily available.

Or also a D61 front axle. Yep, D61. Its kind of like the D60 but parts between them will not interchange. Just another one of those Ford engineering things where they had to try to fix something that wasn't broke. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

SORRY, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I remembered right when I hit the "submit" button. Not if it's a newer super duty, they come with a D60 in BOTH 3/4 and 1 ton models. I think the FF sterlings were only under 1 ton's. I think. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif For the older stuff...I know... I know...it's just like the chevy's 3/4= 44/14B, ford 44/sterling. I forgot for a sec. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

I had a 84 f250, It had the 10.25 sterling. Nobody uses them, because their aren't many gear options and lockers are outragious!!

    A D61 front in a Ford?! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

    I've never seen a listing for a reverse-spiral (aka hi-pinion) D61 gearset.

Dodge used a D61 front in some of their early Cummins trucks. 3.07 ratio I believe. Standard-spiral (lo-pinion). I think it was the non-intercooled with 727 auto that got it.

The 10.25" Sterling does have a nice meaty Trac-Lok - something you won't find for a 14bFF. Earlier ones had problems with the crush sleeve failing. 93-up models are redesigned. Gearing available from 3.08 to 5.13 and even 7.17 /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Have a look at the tooth engagement on one of these. Its got a Dana 60/70 beat hands down. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

I think they are one of the most "overlooked" rear end options out there.... They don't hang as low as a 14bFF. Within the next year or so, I've got one I'm gonna try running....

Zonkrat uses one in the rear and a Ford D60 front in his IFS deleted truck. It was a good looking swap and very much "built not bought" He's been on the road alot so not much time on here.
