So today my boss/father in law (who wants my job /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif) asks me to change the water pump in his 89 lincoln because it is bad. I say ok. It's just a water pump, I can change the one in my '79 blazer blindfolded with 1 arm. 3 hours later I vow never to let anyone con me into something like that again. I mean honestly does it really require 9 bolts to hold on a stinking water pump? And of course just to get to those 9 bolts I need to remove the shroud and fan (bleeding knuckles), powersteering pump alternater, AIR pump, A/C compressor, and brackets. Once finished I went and beat on my stress dummy for a while then proceeded to do the exact thing again in reverse. Afterwhich I hugged my '79 and promised I would always remain faithful to it's genius simplicity.

    hehehe

A lady with a broke down ford escort the other day was showing a few of us her car- i though her "you see this thing here [points to ford emblem] yeah, this is yer problem, it's all bent up, it should look like this [points to chevy cop car]just head on down to Flow Chevrolet, tell them you want your Ford fixed an they'll have you a complete new body, engine, frame, transmission, wheels, tires, axles, windows, doors, etc. for less than that blown head gasket." /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

it was funny at the time.

figure in 30 mins to scrape/grind/sand the cooked gasket from the timing chain cover. Plus a little time figuring where the 2 hidden bolts were that wouldn't let the pump come free. Then there was the spacer for the AIR pump,, I don't care if you are gumby there is no way in hell you can hold that in place and run the bolt through on your own. Then the rear bolt on the tension pully....why in gods name would you put that bolt BEHIND the bracket??? We have 3 ford trucks here (F150/250/350) and Fix Or Repair Daily is pretty much the norm here. The 350 is on it's second motor at 96k miles. Springs are constantly breaking (guess I shouldn't load 9k lbs of granite on a 1 ton?) and they are generally in bad shape.

My first order of business when my wife and I get the company is to buy a nice 1 ton chevy dump with a turbo diesel /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Feel for these boys, I'm picking up more Ford parts for my Chevy (you can probably guess from our conversations) next week. It'll be fun having parts from the Big Three in one truck, make those trips to the parts stores interesting /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Treat your trucks like $hit and they will treat you like $hit.

Try doing a heater core on a 97 f150 4x4 with the 5.4L in it. I spent 2 days compleatly taking apart the entire dash and the 325 somthing scerws later the heater core was out.

So the "built ford tough" commercials showing the guy with the 1 ton dually on the jobsite with 3 ton of scrap metal in the back is a bit misleading huh?

Seriously though the 3 ton haul was about 4 blocks and that truck wasn't the one breaking the springs (F350) that was the truck that blew a motor at only 93k miles. The F250 dump breaks rear springs left and right. We even installed coilovers to see if that would help.

As for maintenence they get their tuneups and oil changes every 3k miles just like any other vehicle. They just do not seem to hold up to the wear and tear that ford advertises they should.

I will give ford credit for 1 thing. They put the distributer in front where a normal human can reach it. WTF were chevy engineers thinking putting the dist way in the back against the firewall anyway?

Chevy put the distributor back there so that you can change the timing chain and water pump in an hour's time. Ford put it in the front so you can easily access the POS distributor when it breaks. The only good thing about ford is how much money it makes the shops. Try checking the timing on a 97 ford taurus with a 3.8L.
