    Re: why \"jimmy\"

It is. Go listen to C.W. McCall's "Convoy"...."Cab over Pete with a reefer on, and a Jimmy hauling hogs"
or "The Girl on the Billboard"....

    Doodle-de-do-doo, A-doodle-do-do-do
Who is the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway?
Rolling down the highway in my Jimmy hauling freight
From Chicago to St. Louis, Lord I see her everyday
A double clutchin' weasel like me can hardly ever
Get a girl to look at him that way
Like the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway

Wow what a girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on a billboard in the field near the big old highway
I bet it wouldn't take her very long to get gone
If someone would pull a dirty trick and take her towel away
I slow my Jimmy down to 20
That's how many wrecks I see there every day
Caused by the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on a billboard in the field near the big old highway
    A-doodle-do-do-doo, A-doodle-do-do-doo

Oh I love the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on a billboard in the field near the big old highway
I guess I'm gettin' bolder 'cause I'd rather kiss and hold her
Than just keep a lookin' at her everyday
At 4.45 coffee drinking eatin' time Jimmy shimmied
While I woke up the artist that painted the display
Of the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway

Doggone that girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway
A sleepy headed painter said the girl wasn't real
And I'd better get the (#$%^&) on my way
On Route 66 from the billboard to Chicago
You will find tiny pieces of my heart scattered every which a-way
Shattered by the girl wearing nothing but a smile and a towel
In the picture on the billboard in the field near the big old highway
    A-doodle-do-do-doo, A-doodle-do-do-doo, A-doodle-do-do-doo

Try saying GM real fast, kind get a "Jim" sound. So they went with it and gave it that name. The name sounds small, like a little kid and since GMC was usually associated with big ol' semis runnin' Detriots, it kinda to fit have to have their new a smaller truck called that, lol.

I remember reading somewhere that Jimmy was the name applied to the old GM trucks by their operators/riders during WW2.

Yes, in the trucker's world and our's, Jimmy means "Truck" I remember that from my Truck Driving days when I was like 8 years old...Convoy was my favorite movie! My desk was my 18 wheeler /forums/images/icons/smile.gif and the bed was my cargo...sheets and all!
    Oh to be young again!

    Re: why \"jimmy\"

GMC made thousands of 2.5 ton "deuce and a half" trucks for the army in WWII. They were named Jimmy as mentioned above, by GI's. Good bet will get you money that some of those guys were former truck drivers who had named the GMC semi's Jimmy as well before the war./forums/images/icons/smile.gif For years any GMC truck was called a Jimmy, and I've been told that was the nickname the big displacement (305, 351, and 40something er other) V6's GMC had in the 60's went by.
