to put the 700r4 trans from a 2wd into a 4wd you need a shorter shaft. advance adapters makes one but im wondering if one out of a 4x4 700 would fit into a 2wd 700. so you end up with a short tail shaft

The only difference between a 2wd and 4wd transmission is the 4x4 cases are thicker and use an aluminum inspection cover with 3/8" bolts rather than sheetmetal screws, and also the output shaft on a 4x4 is shorter than a 2wd. To answer your question you may install a 4x4 shaft into a 2wd case and use it in a 4x4. You could also do it the other way around and install a 2wd shaft in a 4x4 case and use it in a car.
