My TH400 is mated to a 208 case, will a 205 from another TH400 bolt up to mine with no problems? Or is there some gismo I have to get to make it work?

It probably will. The TH400/NP205 was a standard combo about the early 80s. But you will lose the exceptional low range of the 208. A 208 has a low range of 2.61:1, while the 205 has a low range of 1.96:1.

Isn't the output shaft from the 400/208, trans longer than the 400/205 trans? I thought it was. I have heard of people cutting them down, Just thought that was the only difference.

That's what worries me. The output shaft being longer. I thought maybe I'd have to swap it out, but if I can just cut it then that's what I will do. Unless swapping the output shaft is not too expensive or time consuming.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif What would you do?

Yes, a 205 will mate to your 208-version 400, ONLY IF, the 205 is the round 6 bolt pattern t-case found in the '85-'91 K and V30's.

The '84 and older figure 8 pattern 205's will not fit to the 208-version 400 as the output shaft is longer on the '84 and older 205-equipped 400's.

So, is the shaft stickout from the transmission the only problem and can it be cut shorter?

Not if the 400 had a 208 behind it. Just find the '85-'91 np205 and bolt it right onto the 400 with the proper adaptor and you are done.

Now if you had an '84 or older 400/205 combo, then you may need to shorten the shaft but I highly recommend you NOT to cut the output shaft of anything. Locating the proper length shaft is the preferred method.

The transfer case is out of an 89. Do I use the adapter from the 400/205 or will the 400/208 adapter work?
