I got a winch bumper about a week ago and I went to mount it today and I only have 2 grade 8 bolt on each frame rail so 4 grade 8 in all (b/c I had to drill into 3/8 inch thick steel so drill bit is dead) , and more than likely Ill put 2 more on tomorrow once I get a drill bit, do you think this is over or under kill (4 is fine or 6 is better or make some room for 8 bolts), and about to buy a winch today and I cant make up my mind weather spending 200 dollars more for the mm 12k is worth it over the 9k mm I know I need a little more winch than 9k but I would carry a snatch block with me and moneys kinda tight right now, should I bite my tongue and get the 12K or will the 9k be alright /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

I bought the 12k for 599. I know the 9k is selling for 449. Only 150 difference, but if money is tight, you gotta do what you gotta do.

As for the new MM winches, I was considering the 9k at $450, but 4WPW had the 12k at $600 with free shipping so I got that. Looking back the 9k has somehwere around a 1.8 hp motor and the 12k 4.8 or so. That's what decided it for me. It also has the nice roller fairlead. $600 for a decent winch is already a great deal I think, I'd not want to ty and go any cheaper and start sacrificing capability on a grand scale.

As for the bolts, all I can say is 4 bolts to sold steel is better than 8 bolts to swiss cheese. If you drill tons of holes the base material may become too weak to support 8 bolts breaking anyway

Call your local bolt shop (a real hardware store with books and specs) ask for the shear strength rating on the bolts you are using. Ask for both WLL (working load limit) and breaking limit. Add up those numbers there is what it will take to rip a well mounted bumper off. Make sure that the number is at least twice that of the winch capacity (9000=1800 & 12000=24000) also try and fit in a 20% safety margin (now 9000=2160 & 12000=28800). Less large bolts (1/2, 9/16, 5/8) are better than more small bolts (5/16, 3/8, 7/16).
As far as which winch you already admitted you would max out a 9000. That is probably given you an answer already. They both have 3/8 cable and I have seen the MM9000 in action (it won't make any high speed records). Most heavy (10,000+) winches are slow to begin with so there won't be a speed issue between a 9000 and 12000. I am currently arguing the same in my mind (winched out of a trail 3 times in 6 months I now need a winch).
Then again this is only my wordy .02

Use your better judgement on bolts.

    I've got the MM E-12000.
