So I downloaded some ...free software and opened the installer (never actually installed it), and windows firewall popped up immediately and asked to block "p2pnetwork". That spooked me and I tried to open the task manager with ctrl alt del, and it won't come up. I've tried right clicking the task bar > task manager, which does nothing, and start > run > taskmgr gives me this little gem: "Another program is using this file."

I've tried restarting, and will be running Norton, along with spybot, adaware and CWShredder.

    Help?

None of those programs worked, and now my computer is so slow it takes 3 minutes to open one window of IE with nothing else running. I did a little researching this morning, and p2pnetwork.exe appears to be some kind of worm. Great.

I'm going to crosspost from g33kspeak.com, because it's a lot to type:

Get a process killer, kill the p2pnetwork.exe file, then delete it from your system directory, your registry, make sure it's not in "Startup" folder in start menu, and reboot... it SHOULD fix it... use the Find dialogue to find all occurences of "p2p" on your computer... There should also be a fix online for that.

HijackThis SHOULD also be able to remove it, but I'm not sure...

Here is a link solving the problem... clicky!!

I got that P2P hijacker on my kids comp. Had to start in safe mode and do an online virus scan at http://www.trendmicro.com. Their scan found it and cleaned/deleted it. Then I did a search afterwards for any related files to P2P but found none. It was a pertty easy fix. But it was a pretty nasty virus, it was using just about all of the machine's resources.

Yeah That Trend micro site has come in real handy at times. Their PC-cillin is an excelent anti virus program.
Might also want to check out AVG Free for virus protection.
I dont really like Norton it lets too much thru, espically spyware. Norton is usually one of the first programs I delete when I buy a new computer.
Go here and download AVG freehttp://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 Click on the link that says avg70free 303a468.exe at the bottom of the page for the free edition.
IMHO even tho it is free i think it is way better program than Noton. It also uses less of your machines resources than Norton. I am using it on my laptop. I also deleted Norton and installed AVG on my Kids machine after it got infected with that Worm. Been using it for 6 months or so. It works great. My kids are always downloading music, games, and stuff off the net. So far AVG free has caught all the nasty stuff that comes with it. It also automaticly scans Email. Auto updates, ECT
