Modern distros like Ubuntu are pretty easy. Still, I was mostly being sarcastic :D But, if you have to reinstall windows on a machine, that is as good a time as any to try out the alternative. If you don't like it, you can always install windows over it later :thumb:

If you still have it installed, it's easy to recover your key from the installed OS

What RJ said. There's an app called "keyfinder" or something like that. It will actually find your key in the machine and you can write it down or print it.

Nope, I'm an a$$hat, no can do..

I decided to reformat. Instead of being smart and making a boot disc, I was lazy and just did it with the cd... nuked it, loaded xp, did it's thing, it rebooted to finish, then asked me for the key..

all it does now is go right to the setup for xp and ask for the key...

gonna add another harddrive to it while its down now..

haha, the ole Gateway P3 on 98 SE cranks! Ah, the joys of the blue screen of death...

I'm running a WD in the box and have had good luck with it.. How is Maxtor these days? Seagate? see alot of Seagate stuff on sale...

    NewEgg or Tiger Direct?

seagate > wd .... and a WAY better warrenty 2.

Heres a secret for ya, if you have a windows XP home OEM disk (needs to be an OEM disk) you can check the sticker on the side of a buddies case and use that key to install. an OEM key can be activated 3 times before it triggers anything with M$.

    enjoy.
