the doorbell kept going off with noone touching it. i took the doorbell off... the doorbell kept ringing with no consistency... so i took the chime off the wall... is it gonna be ok to leave it like that for a while? should i freak out now before there is a fire? call an electrician tomorrow?

Normally the dorbell circuits are 24VAC lines. Pretty small.
Find the transformer, and check the wiring. I bet that 2 of the secondarys are touching...

Most are installed in the garage or in the entry closet.
The transformers are only 3x3x3 inches. I'll try to find a pic for you.

I don't remember the exact voltages that are on the output side of those trnasformers but there is more than one.
Something like 28Vac, or 15Vac, or some other one.

If you remove it to replace it be sure that you rewire it the same way when you put it back.

Another poissibility is that the switch is shorthing out. It is just a simple MSP switch.

Sometime they put them in the attic.
If a cridder chewed on the wire and caused the wire to touch each other, it would set it off. If you can't replace the wire, get a wireless one and save yourself the hassle. Low voltage wiring almost never causes fires.
The transformer would just burn out.
