Wish Me Luck..I\'m gonna do a R&P this weekend>>>(Pic added)

Ok I have decided to swap my own gears! This weekend I will be tearin down my front end. Then I will stuff my D44 with 4.09 R&P, Power-Lok,Warn axels,Warn fuses, bearings seals etc.....
WaaaaHooooo, I just couldn't stand knowing that someone else would be working on my rig. Not only that but they would probably want to test drive it too!! Oh man, let someone else drive my rig??No way thats like sleepin with my wife[IMG]..
Anyhoo if any of ya'all have any "Tip & Tricks" you would like top share on doing a R&P PLEASE don't heasitate to share them....I need all the help I can get..
Thanks Gang, oh ya it feels good to have CK5 in my blood again!![IMG]

Make sure you get bearing races. I put new bearings in mine do to a pinion bearing failure. I ordered the bearings, but forgot the races. I did it at the last minute too so I had to forgo the races. It is still holding together, hopefully it will stay for a while.

ahh Yes thank you. I'll have to double check the new bearings I recived to make sure they are complete with races.....
    Anyone else have a comment???????

Assuming you got a complete rebuild kit, just make sure it is really well setup before final assembly...shoot for a real good contact patch and check the backlash thoroughly...a little off and you will be back in there : ( If your lucky, you'll have howling gears, and if you aren't lucky, you'll have broken parts! Not to discourage you, just last time I did it (with used gears mind you) I ended up taking it apart all over again and doing it RIGHT : )

Pretty cool pictures, I've only seen the top right one before. Just as long as your contact pattern is balanced is the big deal.

Good Luck with this project. I've never had the guts to do one myself. A freind of mine did a rear carrier change a week before he drove his Jimmy from California to Oklahoma and that worked. You got to let us know how things turn out for you so we might try it ourselves and save some $. Here is a tool I think you'll need for the job. I Tried to cut and paste the add but I lost the pic, anyways it's www.jegs.com.

    Quit Your Whining!
The universal pinion depth setting tool is used to measure the pinion depth of most
automotive and truck differentials. To get the measurements, attach the tool to the
machined surface in the housing and check the distance to the pinion gear. Three dial
indicator extensions (2''-4'') are included for a variety of rear end types. Complete with
    easy-to-read instructions.

Part# 778-66516 Pinion Set Up Tool
    $ 99.99

Re: Wish Me Luck..I\'m gonna do a R&P this weekend>>>(Pic added)

The universal tool from Jegs is a little more complicated than that. You have to find the difference from the machined surface to the bottom of the race seat. The axle housings are line bored, so the machined flate surface you are measuring from is not always center.
Burt, I taught myself how to do this. It is not hard. ITs just time consuming. I highly recommemd 2 tools. I micrometer to check your shim thickness and a dial indicator with a magnet base.
Ok, well 3 tools. A dead blow hammer.
Also when your setting your pinion bearing preload. A good idea for the right preload is to tighten it down till you get no play, then tighten it down till you can grab the yoke and spin it as hard as you can and when you actually release the yoke from your grasp it should turn a half turn. Also make sure you get your races fully seated using a good brass punch. You will not hurt those races very easily.

Emmett!!! Is that the same rear end Im getting from you that you forgot to put the new races in?

Will work for beer, parts and tools.

Ok a Micrometer looks like a C clamp with a ruler stamped on it, right? What is a magnetic based dial indicator? What about an inch lb. torque wrench to messure bearing pre-load, suppose to be like 8inchlbs or something?

I have been taking pics and so far I have the intire D44 gutted.
So the reassembly starts Friday night after work.

I have allot of hard parts to buy this week. Hey anyone know were to buy spilndles, I'm gonna check all my local sources today.....

I know mabie I'll do a writeup and call it "Driveway Gear Swap, GreenHorn Style"

Yes the micrometer is a little thousandths ruler with 2 fingers or arms with a little roller wheel for your thumb, but I think ffrom your description you know what that is.
The dial indicator is a circular guage with the little arm sticking out. As you push in on the arm the needle will move. For that they make a magnetic base for the dial to attach to. It has to arms on it with adjusters so you can move adn tighten the dial to the right position to line the arm up with the surface of the gear teeth. This is used to check your backlash. What back lash doesis allows proper room between the gear teeth so that oil can get in there. If your lash is too low or too tight as you may call it, you will not be getting proper oil cooling on the teeth. I got mine from JC Whitney.
The inch pound wrench would be nice, but for an inch puond wrench to read that low they get VERY VERY costly. Were talking around $200. But you can re-read my reply from above on doing that by feel, and it is 20 inch lbs for new bearings and 15 for used bearings.

Will work for beer, parts and tools.

Sweet, thanks that sounds clear, well sorta. If you don't mind elaberating a little more on the baklash adjustment. So were am I checking with the dial indicator? Having a hard time with a visual on this? does this help
    [IMG]
I think I have seeen the tool your talking about but just can't find a visual in my coffee filled brain...........

    Hey Steve,
I bet you have already seen this artical but here is a link anyway. I know it is the wrong axle, but it still has some good pointers. And it also shows the dial indicator.

Re: Wish Me Luck..I\'m gonna do a R&P this weekend>>>(Pic added)

Ok, with the ring and pinion in the truck all bolts tightened down and snug the back lash is the amount of freeplay in the ring gear while wiggling it back and forth (trying to rotate it, but not to the point where it turns the pinion gear) This amount of space in there allows for the oil to get between the Ring gear teeth and the pinion teeth. As this is where they contact one another adn create the most friction and heat. So too little or no backlash will not aloow oil to get in between the teeth were they both touch one another.
The dial indicator and the base, normally can be mounted right at the bottom center of there surface area where the cover bolts on to the housing. You will want to dial arm to be pointing up and contacting one of the teeth of the ring gear (while the ring gear is wiggled or rotated clockwise as if you were look from the driveside toward the passy side. Then you will dial the guage to zero, then you will rotate the ring gear counter clock wise till the teeth in the back touch the pinion gear teeth. This is the back lash. It will push the dial arm up and give you the reading or the amount of backlash. It will be somewhere around .008 (at least with most Richmond Gears) adn it can go plus or minus .004. But I made sure mine was dead on. If the backlash is too much, meaning that if the dial guage rolls over to lets say .015, then you need to move the ring gear close to the pinion gear by .007. So you will have to subtract .007 from the driver side adn add it to the passenger side. This is the fun part. You have to use the micrometer adn play with the shims and their thicknesses.
So like if you need to move the ring gear over by .008 you go in there pull the carrier back out and measure your shims. Say you have a shim that is .020 in the mix and you have a spare shim of .012, then you would replace the .020 with the .012 thus a .008 change. It is time consumming and teadious but not hard.

Key note though. Dont add the carrier pre-load till you get the backlash set. It makes it alot easier to get the carrier in and out if the bearings arent tight.
To set the carrier preload, all you have to do is, after you get everything all set, you will wanna pull out a .010 shim and replace it with a .015 on both sides of the carrier.
or replace a .015 with a .020. But .005 on both sides of the carrier is pretty good. You can go a little higher. Say may .007 or .008 at the most. If you go more than that you will take greater chances on destroying the shims installing the carrier as well as over heating the carrier bearings. But Randy's Ring and Pinion has a little spat on all this too. I would read his stuff too.

Will work for beer, parts and tools.

Was turning wrenches in a Chevy Dealer many moons ago. When it came to rebuilding the rear end of a vehicle I lost my butt. Did it by the book ... couldn't get it right. The shop forman tried to help ... by the book ... couldn't get it right either. That is not the acceptable patterns.

He said screw it and rebuilt it the old way ... mechanics intuition, skill, and experience. Woked out perfectly. From then on I figured I'd let someone else handle the rears.

Good luck and may the force be with you. Read as much as you can and keep asking questions.
