We are trying to plan a camping weekend for the 22nd/23rd of this month. My wife and I have camped at Big Basin (Santa Cruz mountains?) before, but she's asking me to find a place thats not a campground.....more like a spot out in the wilderness somewhere. Ideally, a place where we could camp and do some hiking, and bring the dog.....maybe with some kind of water or river close by????

Anyone know of a spot that might fit her description? I'm loving the idea of having to "wheel" to a camping spot, and getting away from the city for a while. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Lots of places up here by Shaver Lake. There are a lot of small lakes that have cool trails you have to take to get to them.Coyote Lake and Red Lake is a cool trip. You can check out pics of them in the link in my sig.

Mendocino Nat'l Forest is where I usually go for that type
    of trip.

It will be dusty - multi-use trails that see a bit of
    traffic

You can get way out from the camping spots and pic your
own place by a river or lake etc.....

We usually enter the forest in the town of Upper Lake,
go towards the town of Stoneyford, come out around Napa.
Good loop with some challenging trails.....

I would be happy to play tour-guide but I don't know what
I am doing that weekend (getting hitched this weekend so
it's all over according to some..... /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif )

This is our first and last - strange since we are both 34....

Those sharks are always there. Just get noticed when they bite the occasional surfer.

The Ferellon (sp?) islands have shark observatories - they had some of the footage on the Disco channel - cured me of wanting to surf!

18' great whites coming ALL THE WAY out of the water while hitting seals. And the seals were usually in pieces by the tim they hit the water. Very impressive!!

My dad and i have gone to Lake Edison many years in a row.
Edison is above Shaver Lake (like fizzlefry mentioned) and Huntington lake.
There are quite a few off road trails around there. A few
small hillclimbs and a small mud pit where a little creek crosses a trail.
Thousands of rock areas with boulders, quarry's etc to take twisted pictures. Part of the road on the way in there is a little bit of a hairy single lane road with mountain side and cliff to the other side.
Fishing is good at Lake edison, and mono creek that comes outta lake edison is really good. We usually catch more fish than we can eat or have in possession. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
There are some hiking trails around there also.
You can hike several miles up to some high altitude lakes where golden trout are.
Mono hot springs are right there also. They are way cool natural hot baths. Little eden is a hot tub you could probally fit 20 people into.
If ya want anymore info just ask. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Ditto on the Union and Utica lakes. It's a great area. The girlfriend and I went up there on Memorial day weekend. Very few people. They do have a pit toilet at Union now but that is it. Here are some pics that I posted on "the other" BBS.

    Here

Almost forgot...there are some good moderate trails up there that have some really nice camping on them as well (Slickrock, Deer Valley, Sourgrass, etc.)

You could go up to Wentworth Springs campground on the con. It takes a little wheeling to get there nothin much though. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif There's pit toilets and a creek going right by and your on the con. Can't get much better then that.
