my dad bought a 78 blazer a while back and we tried to get it running today and the keys that he gave up were the wrong ones. i would really like to se if this truck runs. is there a way that i can manipulate a key to make it work or anything else that i could do with out destroying the steering colum or the ignition system to get it started?
    Thanks TJ /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

run a hot wire from the battery to the coil and jump the starter to turn it over till it fires up.

i got ahold of the guy that we bought it from, and he is going to look for the keys. it might take him a while to find them, or he may not find them at all. if he doesn't find them then i probably would go buy another ignition. I would rather spend the 20 bucks that it is going to cost me for something else. i don't want to spend the money if i don't have to.

Lets see if I can remember this. You can pull the plastic piece under the dash and the metal piece, both are directly under the steering column. You will pull out 4 phillips screws in the plastic and two or three more out of the metal.
Next remove the air conditioning tube that runs to the vent on the far left. Doing all of this should give you access to the wiring on the collum. You will want to get to three main wires.

The wires you willbe looking for will be thicker than all the rest. 10g if I remember correctly.

    <font color="red"> RED----CONSTANT 12v </font>
    <font color="pink">Pink----Ignition </font>
    <font color="purple">Purple or</font> <font color="yellow">Yellow</font> <font color="purple">-----Should be your starter wire.</font>

You will want to take and make it so you can access the wires by stripping them back. Jump a wire to the Ignition wire from the Constant 12v lead. This will turn on the ignition, dash lights etc. Just like turning the key. This will need to stay connected for as long as you want the vehicel to run. Next, take a wire from the Constant 12v and touch it to the starter wire. DO NOT WRAP THIS, just hold it. This will trigger the starter. If you have the igintion wire on, it should crank over and start (if the trcuk runs.)

This should be right. Hope it helps.

If you really want to do this, you can also just remove the switch itself and push the slider with a screw driver... So much easier to "hot wire" without butchering something when the ignition was in the dash.
