it all started when I was playing in 4 low with the hubs out (2 low) lust playing around got some good tire spin going when... klunk klunk sh*t klunk klunk
I get out and look... nothing visibly broken jump back in and put her in reverse go about 1 turn and klunk.
I pulled forward there wasn't much noise so I stuck her back in reverse and give just a little gas and I hear klunk klunk GRIND!!!!!!
diagnosis stripped pinion I think, I am going to tear her down tomorrow and find out. when I figure it out I will post some pics

PS this makes broaken rear end #3, 2 of them happened this week

stock gears? stock gears are made of a different steel than many aftermarket performance gears. I think it's the amount of nickle alloy thats in the mix.

Mine did that too but it was caused by the small pinion bearing failing. I don't think it was because you were running it hard. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

We have UPS trucks come in that have totally blown up a Dana 80. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif I've also seen those 5 ton Rockwells come in with broken teeth on the ring gears. It was out of a big dump truck at the TXI Quarry.

[/ QUOTE ]Yea... My uncle twists splines, and snaps shafts in his Rockwells all the time (5-ton rocky's in 2.5 ton housings). The housings hold up fine, but the shafts go bye bye quite quickly.

You should see the power divider with thru shafts that come out of the Mack dump trucks, mixers, and garbage trucks... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Those things are unbelievably heavy!
