I assume it's the same as a Chevrolet. The difference is the Z71 has upgraded torsion bars, a transfercase skid plate and Bilstein shocks.

According to my experience working as a lot boy at a chevy dealership, i've found all Z71's to have posi's, while 4x4 do not. This is what i've found, but I could very well be wrong.

I dont think the posi thing is accurate- if I remember correctly my 99 Z-71 did NOT have it---however my '01 2500 HD D/A DOES....MudNurI does too- and she's not a Z-71...

ok, your probably right, maybe it was just an option then.....hmmmm

Although, I think the majority of Z71's do have posi's though.

Well, hey, if you were surrounded by hundreds of brand spankin new trucks and cars, you might be tempted to have some fun with them. Lets just say winter-time is great.

I have also found out with 4x4's are the best out of the factory, and the study concludes: never take 4x4, 2002 crewcab, long box, duramax's onto sanddunes (they high center easily, very heavy, lots of digging, boss still doesn't know, hehehe)

Skidplates, bilstein shocks, and a sticker.

    MudNurI,

Your 2500HD might have a posi, but it's not a Z71. Z71 is a 1/2 ton only package (which makes no sense to me).

    that was my point-

he said the Z-71 DID but the 4x4 DID NOT---

my Z-71 DID NOT and my 4x4 DOES

did that not come out that way?

Upgraded tortion bars are also included on the Z71. The 2 door Tahoe also comes with the upgraded torsion bars. I have a 97 Tahoe that has them.

The posi rear end is the locking differential option.

I believe the Z-71 package included upgraded shocks and skidplates, not completely sure on the upgraded torsion bars.......and don't forget about that all important sticker. For the shocks, I think they stopped using the actual Bilstein shocks at some point. The Z-71 package on a new truck was only around $200-$300 so you know it does not include much.

The posi (Gov-lock, G80 RPO code) was not standard on the Z-71, but an option offered on all trucks. My dad had a '00 Chevy Z-71 that did not have the posi.

You can order any truck with the heavy duty suspension group and skidplates and basically have the same truck, just without the Z-71 sticker. All in all, the Z-71 was basically just a "image" gimmick to sell the truck.

No it's not. If that was the case, they wouldn't have waited so long to make a suspension setup for them. They're wider...and they have 8.5" 10 bolts out back.

The ZR2's actually have some legitimate parts. The frame is different (wider, heavier??), it has the larger 8.5" rear axle with the locking diff option, and some upgraded suspenison pieces, 31" tires and flares, and I believe skidplates and tow hooks. I believe the added height of the body comes from the different frame, but it does not actually have a body lift added.
If they did a fullsize truck with the same concept it would be really cool.

Zr2 NEVER had a body lift...
I owned one.. 6.2 hit it right on the nail head.. Truck was wider than the standard S-10 and it had a full-size 10 bolt rear axle with a Eaton Locker in the rear.. STANDARD equipment.
I would definately buy another ZR2 in a heartbeat....
