03 1500, Sold it.

Probably fine, but you won't know until you look into it. Most limp mode / engine de-rate type deals are designed to keep catastrophic damage from happening, so I'd lean towards fixing the leak and running it.

This is the direction I am leaning.

You would really have to try to hurt that thing. Fix the leak and bet it will be fine.

I have over heated my Tahoe like 4 times causing the limp mode and the head gaskets failed. I think it sets the code around 230 or 240.

I’ve had the buggy engine so hot it shut off multiple times. It’s fine, and still runs perfect knock on wood.

Sounds like failed water pump, low coolant, overheating situation. Swap the pump do a coolant system pressure test and be back on the road in 2hrs.

This is the passenger side hose. I could see it spraying down. Will not get to it until later. Still trying to get heat in the church building.

Done. Problem was bad water pump gaskets. Whomever changed the pump out, put some fiber gaskets on it. One blew out. About a month ago I tightened the water pump bolts because of a drip. They were all not snug. Drip stopped, until it became a blowout. New metal with o-ring gaskets, all new hoses and new thermostat later, all seems well.

Also plugged the code reader in to clear the 2 codes and it did not work. Just the emissions lights flashing rapidly. The fuse was blown. May have been that way since I bought it. Never checked for codes. The 2 I had were over heat protection and air flow. Moved it with the intake duct off.

Ready for a few trips to Tennessee.

Dodged a bullet, these motors are stupid tough.. like Ben I have gotten mine hot because the belt came off.. seen 275 once on another truck !! But no issues thus far..

Bought an LQ9 to put in this thing in the future. 5.3 is piston slapping at start up. May turn it into a wheeling rig some day.

Thought yesterday was going to be the start. Was down town in Knoxville promoting my food truck repair business, sitting in the truck with the ac on writing down info. Went to drive away and noticed the temp gauge was pegged and the truck shut down just then.

Opened the hood and noticed a leak in a heater hose. Got tools and stuff out to fix it. Burned my hand pulling it apart. Under a hot hood in the sun, dripping sweat. Cut the hose off and slid it back on the firewall fitting.

Realized the tank was still full. Why was it cooking? Only added a quarter gallon of coolant.??????????

Turns out the clutch for the fan will not lock up. Got it up to 240* in a PM of water and it just spins free. Could be why it was over heating on the drive to Tennessee. Never worked.

I left Lowe's today and the truck was driving fine. Went down from a small rise in the road and the speed went up a tiny bit. No big deal, cruise is on, but I have not ever noticed it before. Tach shows idle. Then at the bottom as I start to head up the RPM's climb quickly. I tap the brake to shut the cruise off. No transmission engagement. I try the throttle a couple of times, no dice. Gear selector shows I am in drive. Great, as if I am not busy enough, now I have a 4L60E with 158k miles on it taking a dump. Go to pull it down into 3rd just hoping to get it home. The shift lever clicks down when I bump it as I reach for it. Goes into gear. ???????? Still shows in drive.

Fixed it I guess. Showed it was in gear but obviously was not. I tried to recreate it. I can not. Shift lever does not have any slop in it.

Back to work now.
