I've been saving my pennies and cashing in beer cans for a few months now but I finally have $1,300 saved. I'm in mid-build of my K5 and I can't decide if I should go with a winch (this one)

Or 5.13 gears in my 1 ton axles. I'm currently running 3.73's and I have 39.5" boggers. I'll be running an SM465 with a 205 (all 32 splined) and a healthy 350 TBI engine. I'm going to scrap as much weight as possible from this thing, weld my rear diff. and dive head first into the mud with it. I'm really leaning towards the winch now and gears later. What do 'yall think /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

P.S. No I will not send the money to you /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Darn there goes my good idea...

Why don't you buy a locker in the rear instead of welding it? What size of winch is that? How does the truck run with those gears you have in it now?

-welding is free, locker is $400
-that's a 16.5 ti winch
-the gears were OK with my 700R4 and 38's, they should still be OK with my 39.5's and the new SM465

oooh... wow 16.5! Thats alot! I would get the winch so you could brag you could pull anyone out /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif If the truck is okay with the gears, the gears can wait /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I figured with dual lockers and lower gears I'd only get myself stuck farther out in the mud than all my friends. At least with a welded rear and crappy gears I can't get too far but I'll be able to get myself out with the winch. And maybe pull others out and make some money for my gears

Here's a place that has a free ring and pinion set with every purchase of a locker.

Thanks for the link /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I've heard mixed things about the OX locker. I like them but the company is not settled in enough yet for me to spend that kind of money. Besides I have a limited budget (see "$1,300" in subject line /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

I would get the winch, especially if mud is what you intend to play in.

Lockers and tires and gears will help keep you from getting stuck but no matter how big your rig is you'll be stuck eventually.

No matter how big or small your rig is, a good winch will get you out.

Add the other goodies later.

I REALLY want a front locker but I spent the cash on the winch first.

Go ahead and roll your eyes all you want.....

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you really need a 16.5 winch? Shoot, you put that thing on the front end you better have one helluva mounting system on there or it be just a fancy winch sitting in the mud. I have even heard that serious winches like those will pull the frame out of alignment in the deep, deep mud. Could you not save some money by getting a 9500 and some snatch blocks? Then whats left over could be spent on a cage, since apprently here if you have kids you better have a cage or you'll have Tecton in all his glory on his soapbox telling you how to run your life /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I kinda agree with this. I put off buying the winch. Sure wish i had one!! could have saved my azz a few times before!! My old 76 ran 40's on 4.10's (open front/locker rear. 3/4's) I wussed out in a few places, because of no winch!!
I still don't have one!! It's on my list to get BEFORE i get the rig off raod. But if you buy one, I can wait a little longer!! /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
