My local steel supplier sells their 1/4" plate per pound. Does anybody know how much a square foot of 1/4" weighs? Is this a good price? .065 per pound?

The above quote sounds about right, last time I asked about a 4x8 sheet the guy said somewhere around 300 pounds.

man i'm glad i'm in the sheetmetal business. it depends what i'm getting but it might be as low as .47 per lb. unless you have an account i'd say that price is pretty good

So your saying you can get a 4x8 foot sheet of 1/4 steel for $20??? If so hook me up. :D
i did say depending on what , angle or bar or tube etc. but if you want to drive out here to pick it up, i'll sell you a 4x8 for $20 but that damn gas is gonna kill ya

Due to my work schedule I cant get to my normal steel place much anymore. The closest place to home that sells steel is orchard. There its $20 something for a 12"x12" piece of 1/4" plate. :eek1:

Cool thanks yeah that comes out to about 6.63 per square foot. I think I paid around $8 last time I bought steel. Maybe they have other stuff cheap too:laugh:

When our shop buys crs/hrs 1/4 stock and we use the cubic inches x .29 formula for cost estimation. A 4'x8' sheet will weight 334 pounds.

48x96=4608 now multiply by thickness (.25) and you get total cubic inches=1152 , now multiply by .29 = 334.08 pounds per 1/4" 4'x8' sheet.

I get my steel fo 30 cents a pound, they have huge pieces in the scrap pile, huge, and since it az, no rust, sometimes some surface crap, when I boxed my frame I bought steel this way, saved me a bunch! all the steel I picked up looked clean and perfect,
