Which is it or both? What would a 78 or 79 3/4 ton 10 bolt have in it?
And dana 44s have 30 splines, right?
I have found a post where someone is saying he has 10 bolt front shafts that are 30 spline. Did they make such an animal? What did they come in?
Yes they did make a 30 spline 10 bolt. It was introduced in the 88-91 year models if I remember right. But if you have a 79 then it should be a 28 spline.
Yesiree, 89-91 K5's and Suburbans, but not all were 30 spline...some were left over 28 spline axles. I happen to have the 30 spline in mine. Compared to a 28 spline shaft, there's more meat at the splined end, but the axle still necks down to the same diameter as the 28 spline, so no strength improvement. Dana 44 axleshafts neck down the same amount, so the 30 spline 10 bolt is the same strength. Yours will have 28 splines...
30 spline 10 bolts can in 3/4 tons fronts from 89 to when then went to IFS... i think.
My 89 Blazer came with 30 spline's front and rear. NOW, those are long gone now, but that's another story /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I mad ethe switch to 28 spline for 2 reasons.
1) I got a smokin' deal on a 28 spline 10 bolt front with a lockrite
2) 28 spline shafts are a LOT easier to find that 30's. Ask 6.2Blazer
That's for sure. I only found one set of 30-spline shafts within a 100 mile radius locally and I bought just about every set for sale on here for spares (2 or 3 sets).....which I don't need anymore with the 60.
I went to a 28 spline front to the same reason, got mine with 44 outers, with x-over arm, 4.1 and trac lock for a NICE deal.
I did not want to re-gear a 10 bolt also.
