Well it finnaly happened, was out wheeling yesterday and heard a huge pop and then grinding sounds. It was kinda my fault though I was hammering it way to hard and hit a ditch sideways. I think it locked up at about 4000rpms and just couldent handle it. I Popped the cover today and there are metal shavings at the bottom of the diff and my ring gear has some gouges in it. My question is should I take out the gov-lok and replace it with a detroit or lockrite and run the gears how they are or should I just replace the whole axle with a new 14 bolt. I can get one from a 1978 K20 with 4:10's and another gov-lok for $200. Will this bolt right into my 1984 K20?

i'm no expert, but that doesn't look bad at all, compared to most diff failures i've seen. but looks may be decieving. it could have stress cracks or worse. i guess you could have it magnafluxed. i'd probably swap it out and carry it along as a trail spare.

I don't see a problem with that diff...even the shavings aren't horrible. Ring gear looks fine too. I guess it is possible the Gov-lock is nothing more than bits of shrapnel inside the carrier, but you'd have to take it apart to find out for sure.

Its defintaly broken. When power is applied it just grinds and you can hear the peices bouncing around.

I don't think you can put a lockright in that diff. I think you need an open diff.

gears look fine. Take the govlock appart and weld it up. There are pics somewhere of how I welded MTMikes govlock

hey, where are you in Santa Barbara. Better yet, where were you when you blew up the diff? Group of us here in town are looking at getting out on Sunday.

just swap out to an open carrier, toss in a spool or a detroit and keep on truckin:D

i blew up a gov lock in a 14 bolt a few years ago, the rear end became useless, drove home on the front...that is untill the front blew the driveline...then I pushed in 2 blocks...long day:crazy:

West camino cielo up on highway 154. Went on thursday just after the rain, it was really muddy.

It should, but I agree with the others who said your best bet is to get an open carrier, stuff a detroit or lock-rite in it, and install it. Your gears look fine, BTW,,,
