I have a 14 bolt that I just had rebuilt and regeared with 4.56's. I was out on a fire road and the pinion nut came loose and the whole thing fell off yoke and all. Can I just put it back on or do I have to replace the crush sleeve? Anyone have an idea?

I tried to get the shop to fix it but they said with a spool it was an off road truck and therefore had no waranty. I am thinking of taking him to small claims court.

If there is no damage I would not waste your time with small claims, however that shop is not worth a damn if you ask me.

Yes, replace the crush sleeve, Randy's ring and pinion could get you one quickly among other vendors.

I love how shops and companies can come up with excuses to cover their poor work. The nut didn't come off because there's a spool in there, it came of becuase some one didn't torque it correctly.

But, you gotta convince a judge of that. Maybe where ever you take it for repair can write a short note stating it was install incorrectly the first time.

Good luck.

From what I remember, you get one crush out of the crush sleeve and that's it. I think you're suppose to change it. I doubt everyone changes the sleeve when they swap yokes. IIRC, I think I ended up backing my nut off once or twice when I set up my 14 Bolt with a Detroit. It's been 50K miles and no problems.

See what some others say ... maybe I got lucky.

that shop SUCKS

pass on the info to all friends ..

then learn to do it your self. lots of good info here.

Again with the crush sleeves. You really dont NEED too. Are you SUPPOSE to in the book, yes. Plenty of people dont.

Technically you're suppoose to replace the crush sleeve anytime the pinion nut comes off.

There is reall only two reasons why the pinion nut came off, first is NEVER reuse a pinion nut (don't know if your was new or not) and the second is if the person didn't get the pinion bearing preload set correctly.

Unless the shop has in writing that there is no warranty for a specific reason you would win at your day in court (is it really worth it to lose a days pay to deal with such a minor amount of money that you could possibly regain?) I would have someone else (a reputable shop) check and repair any damage and then give a copy of that bill to the original shop OWNER and see if anything comes of it, if not then like someone else said make damn sure ALL of your buddies AND their buddies know not to ever use that shop again.

I think I will try to just tighten the nut and see what happens. What is the torque specs? I have told everyone that I know in Reno about the shop. Just for kicks it is Just Rear Ends in Reno NV. I have already sent the certified letter to him asking for the money I paid for labor back. I think that was fair. I have not heard back from him.

There where several other things that went wrong with this rear end. The pinion seal has leaked from day one. Also the right axle seal has leaked. The other thing I don't think is his fault is on the first trip over the rubicon, one of the cross pins in the mini spool fell out. No damage and I drove it off the trail, but that should not happen.

There is no "torque spec" on any axle that uses a crush sleeve. You tighten the pinion nut until all major play is gone then start using an INCH pound torque wrench to check rolling drag on the pinion bearings if not within spec then tighter on the pinion nut. You MUST remove the pinion assembly from the housing in order to do this.

There used to be a shop here called Just Rearends and the guy was a slime ball and was under survielance by the FBI for drug trafficking and was caught and did some time then opened a new shop in another local city here and who knows what happened from there but maybe this is the same guy. I can't remember the guys name off the top of my head but i want to say it was JR.

None of this sounds good from a shop called "Just Rear Ends". I could see a shop that does all kinds of auto work having trouble with a rear end build, but not one that specializes in "Just Rear Ends"

Good Luck,

Eric M.

I would think that if the pinion nut fell off the rest of the gear setup would be suspect.

a 14 bolt is a super easy diff to set up. The only hard part is crushing the crush sleeve.

how many in lbs am I looking for?

New bearings are 25-35 in/lbs
Used bearings are 5-15 in/lbs

I would consider them to be used bearings at this point but personally would probably go 20 in/lbs to be safe.

Thanks, I only have about 350 mi on the rebuild. I will use the 20 in lbs. I will let you guys know what happens.
