Got a R&P set today (used) and the snub shaft on the pinion shows 2 or 3 little worn grooves around it.

Will this affect anything? The grooves go around the shaft, not perpendicular to it. Is there such a thing as a Speedi-Sleev for them? If so, what is done about the pinion snout bearing since the Sleev would be a little larger in diameter?

Can and will get a pic of the snub later if you want to see. Just checking to see if anyone else experienced this.

Don't know. I had a buddy take an empty carrier and support to trade for a 4.56 set as the guy had new 4.88's but the wrong carrier to install them on. So we traded his carriers for mine and I got his old gears but kept my 3.73's. So I wasn't able to check his bearing in his housing. Not gonna ask him because he didn't seem to know or understand the terminology and logic behind 14FF's.

But if you mean grooves on the surface of the snub shaft where the bearing resides, then yes, there are grooves on the pinion snub.

The stub rides in a flat roller type bearing,,,,(think needle bearings,,,,but bigger)
If the grooves are actually a "step" on the stub shaft where the rollers ride,, like a ridge on a worn cylinder...then thats not a good sign....

If the shaft has no step or indentions across the length of the stub shaft and only a couple of circular grooves,,,I'd say run it.....:waytogo:

Uploading pics to Photobucket now. Check back soon...

Here are 2 pics.

If the recommendation is not to run this as-is, what about having a machine shop weld it back to thickness and machining the snub to specs?

Hate to toss this just because of the snub when everything else looks kosher.

Yeah, I'm aware what they should look like. I've taken apart and rebuilt tons of these and this is the first time I've ever seen a snub in this shape. Even the 3.73's I removed from this housing appears like your pic.

I just wonder if its worth repairing or not.

4.56 ratio and want to reinstall them back into the housing I removed the 3.73's from. Want to flip it for some cash but I will not reinstall a gearset back into anything if something is wrong or bad, like this pinion snub.

Otherwise I'll have a good carrier to sell if the R&P get tossed in the scrap pile.

the last three 14 bolts i have gone through the pinion looked like that or worse. Never saw one like that till these last three.

what do you use the diff for?

Reread the first post. I don't use this rear and probably won't. I traded parts to help out someone else who needed the carriers I had to fit his new 4.88 gears when he had 4.56 to begin with. I'm just trying to put the rear I have back together to resell but I refuse to do so with bad parts.

Geesh thats a tough one... Maybe try selling it un-assembled? Or let the buyer see it before you assemble? Probably for 9 out of 10 people, that will cause no problems.
