1963 Willys bought on eBay

Ouch! The AC won't be too much of a problem, but power windows? That could be a major engineering feat.

One way to make the windows power would be to use those add-on power gearboxes that replace the window crank handles..crude looking but effective!..J.C. Whitney used to sell them..it'd be a very involved job trying to adapt some "stock" power window motor/regulator into the original doors probably...I recall some old Packards had hydraulic power windows, maybe that could be another way to "power up" the stock window regulators..

Willys wagon

I love the old wagons, I just sold a 1962 last month i had for 10 years. It had a jeep 4.0, auto trans., dana 300, power steering and brakes with disc's. I also own a 1961 wagon on a 1971 K5 Blazer chassis. It has a 550 h/p stroker, sm 465, np 205, autometer phantom gauges, custom interior,38.5 x 15 x 15 swampers. I also have 1 ton axles to be put in withORD high/crossover steering, with a PSC hydro assist. these are heavy duty rigs, made to last like all old iron. love the body style and a ton of room inside, alot more than my rubicon 4 door. I hope you enjoy your new ride as much as I do mine and be ready to have alot of interest every where you go. P.S Make sure you lock it everywhere you go every one will want it!

Thank you, dahreno! Another brain to pick! I will have this wagon in my driveway later today (Wed,) so I'll take pics and become familiarized with it. This is a great forum; everyone is so friendly and knowledgable.

The verdict is in!

Got my Willys wagon Wednesday, and did a lot of crawling all over it to see what I bought on eBay. Looks like it's on the original open C-channel ladder frame, not K5 as I originally thought. The engine is ca. 1985 Chevy 350 general purpose, with aftermarket Edelbrock manifold and Holley 4-barrel; internal mods unknown. Transmission (the word tranny has been co-opted) is a 1978 TH350, transfer case is Dana 18 (probably the only original part of the '63 wagon.) Front and rear axles are from a 1976 Jeep Wagoneer Cherokee according to the previous owner. It has power steering, power brakes (front disc,) tilt steering wheel and a power driver's seat. On the down side, there was installed a bank of switches which is unmarked as to the purpose of each.:dunno: So, I'll be spending the next few days tracing out wiring. One of the switches operates the electric cooling fan mounted on the radiator, not such a good idea.:shame: Anyway, I bought it for something to do, so I guess I got what I wanted!

There's still a lot to do before I trust it for a daily driver. Change all the fluids, clean gas in the tank, etc. The power driver seat doesn't work, so my feet don't reach the pedals (blocks are out of the question.) Also it has no seat belts, which would be nice, and the speedometer cable is too short. Otherwise, it feels great! Engine runs smooth, brakes are spot on, and the power steering is the best I've ever felt. Maybe too easy.

Probably should get a new set of tires, since these are a little dry rotted in places. Musta sat for a while. Four wheel alignment, too. Tie up loose wires, and hit the road!

What size are the tires on it now?

I think it would look good with some Bfg mud terrains 33/12.5/15 if they would fit. :thumb:

Tires on it now are Dayton Timberline A/T 31X10.50R15LT with about 50% wear. Clearance on the rear wheel cutouts is a problem. I'm afraid 33s wouldn't leave me much room for bounce. And yes, the tires do extend outboard of the body there. I was thinking of going the other way with a narrower, taller tire that fits inside the wheel wells, if I could find rims to fit.
