1968 C10 DD, project "New Tricks"

you could spend a bit more and go to a west marine for some moeller ryoken green in spraybomb... runs about 10 a can... 3, 4 cans would get a decent coat on that...

When you say "spraybomb", are you talking rattle can? Can I use that as my primer and the gallon of Rustoleum as my top coat?

I only have experience with those paints from HD. I've used them on my roll cage, bumpers, body, etc. I don't have to worry about rust, so I've never put much thought into primers. I'll have to look up the west marine when I get home from work today, start collecting my stuff.

This is really sweet. I'd love to build something from the frame up.

I have only owned 3 cars in my life time, no wait....2.25 cars :D This is HUGE for me :doah:and everyone thinks I'm crazy :haha:

Since I don't have an axle for this truck (and the donor truck I pick up might be a C20 or 6 lug) what axle should I go with? I've been thinking 9" because I can get everything done for around $1k locally. I'm not feeling up to polishing a 12bolt turd I find on CList either.

yes, a spraybomb is a rattlecan.. it's cali, I figured you had west marines out there...

I've done plenty of equipment rusto douche's on marina equipment over the yrs, nothing wrong with that.. yes, you can just douche over the green stuff...

I'm just saying that was what I meant about a quality primer and paint.. you guys are talking powdercoating, which is big money... I was talking under 300...

but if your not buying a catalyzed modern urethane or epoxy, it's pretty much the same cr@pshoot with most of em.. the "quality" aspect of the material goes way down..

but hey if it holds up fine in your area, looks good from 10 feet, slather anything your comfortable with on... heck, Mutt's bed has a coat rusto douche over it..

just be aware that every airdried product has that weakness, no matter what claims of "miracle in a can" snakeoil they may describe it as..

Thanks Paul.
Really, the powder coating was an idea but I'm not crazy about it. However, most of the money spent is in the sandblasting and since I've given the company over $15k in work recently, I would get a killer deal on doing both. BUT, I don't really care about the frame. I think some of that green primer and Rusto gloss black on top will be plenty good for out here and look great for a long time. Hell, the 43 year old frame looks great today. :)

I guess I should have started off mentioning I tend to be cheap in certain areas and since rust isn't a problem.... :D

Anyone know where I can get rally wheels in 17" or bigger? Anyone make them? I like this design, with the small slits around the edge instead of the large ones. Probably lose the beauty rings, not a fan. :dunno:

Im pretty sure you cant get the truck rally in a 17. You can.defiantly get the car rally and.trim rings in.a 17.

Come to think of it. A truck rally center cap on a car rally wheel in a 17 would look pretty sweet

I'm looking on this website: http://www.davidsrallywheels.com/id73.html

But the sizes are 14-15" only :( Not sure what's going on here. CList is a flop as well. (for now anyway)

Also, is it possible (or wise) to pull a cab and front clip as one unit off of frame?

PS> going to look at a few long beds today. I also found some Trailbrazer SS manifolds I'm thinking about picking up. I'm not sure if I'll need them though, but kinda liking the idea of all stock parts instead of headers. Do the Trail's manifolds work on 5.3 and 6.0 engines? I read the Camaro manifolds tuck next to the block well too.

yes, that's the one..

a decent coat of that with a couple coats of rusto over it would do ok... either put the green on, than paint when it flashes off, couple hr's to a day or so, just go right to paint.. if the green is gonna be on there more than a couple days, scuff it prior to paint with a maroon scuffpad.. I'd go 2 coats of black over it..

The tbss manifolds do fit the other 5.3s and 6.0s. I have a set here, pay shipping and they are yours. Depending on what the local price is shipping may cost more though.

I'll take them!! 91780

Found a guy selling his for $40 here locally, but it's a horrible drive to where he is, traffic traffic traffic :doah: He is getting me a shipping quote Monday, I guess his work has a UPS account :dunno: However, any money I can save helps sooooo much at this point. :doah::doah:

I would rather get the lowest millage motor I can. This can be a problem if I'm looking for DBC set ups. I'm not thrilled with sensors and dodads, but if I keep it as close to factory as possible, it should be easy to diagnose problems or even take it to a dealership if I'm broke down out in the boonies. :doah:

Kinda got off topic there..... Can you elaborate on the DBW stuff? I'm reading through all kinds of info and builds, but most start with DBC stuff. :dunno: And I am still reading. I've got a long ways to go but trying to move as fast as possible. Stripping frame today, sending to sandblaster, and picking up CPP stuff :D

The DBW is pretty common now and considered reliable even in swaps. Its just a pedal assembly with a sensor on it with wires that run to a module that controls the throttle body. I extended my pedal to module harness by like 6 feet so I could mount it with my PCM. There is a lot of sensors and dodads on these newer motors but they arent that scary once you dive in. Check out http://www.lt1swap.com/wiringharness.htm. Everything you need to know about about what sensors you need and cutting up the harness is in one place. The guy does PCM tuning fast and cheap too.

For the pedal assembly I cut off the '03 pedal and welded on the '71 so unless you bend over and look close it looks stock.

On the topic of trailblazer ss stuff if you see a engine cover from one pop up grab it. They cover the coil packs and some other stuff that the stock truck covers dont and look a lot better IMO

Details on the truck....

One fender say camper special, the other C20, and it has 8 lug stuff, the doors have CST on them, but the rear is trailing arm with heavy springs. :dunno: The full float axle is attached to the arms factory like, so that's good. Not sure what the axle is with a removable center like a 9". I would like to drive this around as much as possible until the swap, but need to check over more stuff to make sure things are safe first. Like the seat belt (tying it in a knot doesn't count)

1968 C? longbed and large window
The rockers have rust and need to be replaced, but the rest of it looks very solid. I hate that the doors are cut for speakers and the dash for another stereo. But, I'll take advantage of it and run a decent system.

This truck was fun to drive home. It's sloppier than a $2 whore but ran good on the freeway. What's amazing is that everything works. I've never seen that :doah: Wipers, high beams, reverse lights, all gauges, etc. Only thing needing attention is the shift linkage, reverse light switch adjusting, dash lights, and steering.

:woot: Pictures coming when there is light

While not exactly what you're looking for... I have a set of freshly powder coated black 15x8 Corvette Rally Wheels off my 72 Vette that I'm looking to get out of the garage. Got them blasted and PC'ed two years back then went and dropped the coin on a set of custom 3pc CCW's four days later. Wrapped in great condition Tiger Paws.

Have the trim rings and caps I'd throw in as well. Again, only if you're interested! Definitely get you closer to the sweet orange pickup a few posts up.

Either way, subbed and anxious for updates!
